Intern: Statistics Division, Population and Social Statistics

Job Description

Work Location: Bangkok, in-person

Expected duration: 6 months

Duties and Responsibilities

The internship is located within the Population and Social Statistics Section (PSS) of the Statistics Division of ESCAP.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time.

The internship is conducted in person, in Bangkok duty station, and the duration is for at least three months with an opportunity for extension up to six months, if required by the division.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

The ESCAP Statistics Division is guided by the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics and the Principles Governing International Statistical Activities, and by the work programme and the membership of ESCAP. Our mandates arise from a number of General Assembly, Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and ESCAP resolutions.

The core areas of the Division’s work include:

• Implementing programmes for capacity building in statistics;
• Collecting and analysing data on the region;
• Publishing statistical and analytical publications.

We work closely with the ESCAP Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific and organizations that are part of national statistics systems in the region (national statistical offices are our main counterparts); the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs; other United Nations entities; and with a large number of regional and international organizations that have a mandate in statistics.

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background as well as the internship period. Within delegated authority, the duties and responsibilities of the incumbent may include, but are not limited to the following:

1. Assist with work on gender statistics, population and housing census, migration, displacement and statelessness statistics, disability statistics, population registers, citizen data, the regional CRVS initiative, and other related areas as required.
2. Conduct literature reviews on statistical frameworks, indicators, case studies and country practices related to the aforementioned areas.
3. Contribute to drafting background papers, presentations, blogs and technical documents.
4. Support the organization and servicing of meetings and events, including Expert Group Meetings, Regional Steering Group meetings, seminars, trainings and workshops (e.g. preparation of materials, note-taking, and follow-up).
5. Provide support to capacity-building activities for countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
6. Support communication activities related to the work of the section, including newsletters, websites and online platforms.
7. Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications/special skills

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

• a.) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
• b.) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme: Your training education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset.

Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
