Purpose of the position
The firms focus on socio-economic development (SED) is increasing and they are investing in two new service lines: International Development (with a focus on growing business in Africa) and Sustainable Livelihoods (focused both in South Africa as well as the rest of the continent). Consultants in these divisions will be responsible for researching opportunities to expand service offerings; designing new projects and interventions; pitching these projects to private and public sector players for funding; responding to donor-funded RFPs, and managing project implementation.
Duties and responsibilities
- Quantitative and qualitative research and analysis, on socio-economic and economic trends
- Responsible for the design, development, management, and delivery of distinctive client project outputs, sometimes on a concurrent or overlapping basis
- Design and project manage projects to meet socio-economic development objectives and targets.
- Manage the workflow and contributions of project teams, as well as external consultants as needed
- Public and private sector stakeholder engagement
- Leverage personal and public knowledge of socioeconomic development sector and practices for the benefit of clients. Core topical areas might include: local economic development; ‘Shared Value’
- Contribute to the continued establishment of the SED division in the marketplace, including contributing to the implementation of the team’s strategy and development of new clients
- Contribute to the development, standardisation, and implementation of internal operational protocols, including those around project management, knowledge management, and service delivery
- Lead knowledge-sharing and thought-leadership initiatives, both internally and externally; conceptualise and implement market-shaping research initiatives
Qualifications
- Appropriate Master’s degree in Economics and/or Development Science. Master’s Degree in Agricultural Economics (advantageous)
- Desirable qualification: MBA
Experience & skills
- Minimum of 5 years applicable professional experience
- Management Consulting experience in socio-economic development sectors is preferable
- Understanding and experience of development in Africa
- Knowledge of the current economic climate
- Outstanding research and proposal writing capabilities
- Experience with working with international donor communities
- Understanding and experience of international donor bidding and implementation
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to present to large groups and executive-level audiences
- Strong networks in the international donor community are advantageous
- International work experience is preferable
- High level of proficiency in MS Office
