Job Description

This is an exciting intern position at the British Consulate in Guadalajara, Mexico, where the intern will assist the Department for Business and Trade within its Retail sector, although other sectors may be reviewed. The primary role of this position is to offer commercial and administrative support to the Retail, Food & Drink and Agri-Tech Team within the Department for Business and Trade at the British Embassy in Mexico. This role will operate under and report directly to the Retail Trade Officer in the team.

The successful candidate will collaborate with UK exporters and investors in the Retail sector, aiming to enhance trade and investment activities. The successful candidate will support and develop relationships with British and Mexican companies and deliver an impactful programme of activities focussed on highlighting the UK’s expertise. The successful candidate is also expected to carry out research and to provide support for events (in-person and virtual). This position will englobe support different sections of the British Embassy in Mexico such as Political, Consular, Programmes and others when events/visits take place in Guadalajara.

Roles and responsibilities:

Contribute towards the Trade and Investment objectives of the team: (80%)

  • Carry out Market Research for the 3 sectors when needed.
  • Assist the Retail team on commercial missions, visits and events.
  • Analyse commercial reports to provide feedback to British companies interested in Mexico.
  • Update information on the sectors (one pagers, databases, calendars, pipelines, tracking system).
  • Do research and provide a professional analysis to companies interested in the market.
  • Prepare news briefings to the commercial team with relevant information regarding the trends in the Retail, Food & Drink and Agri-tech sectors.
  • Liaise with stakeholders and relevant contacts.
  • Support marketing activities of the 3 sectors.
  • Engage with colleagues and stakeholders in Mexico, the wider LATAC region and the UK to deliver projects and events.

Collaborate with different teams: (15%)

  • Engage with colleagues and stakeholders in Mexico City, the wider LATAC region and the UK to deliver projects and events.
  • Engage with stakeholders in Jalisco to represent the British consulate in the region.

Contribute to the corporate objectives of the Embassy (5%)

  • Deliver work in line with Embassy Values (Honesty, Professionalism, Inclusion & Respect)
  • Actively contribute to the Interns Advisory Group, and the activities they organise.

MUST be able to write reports both in English and Spanish.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience
  • Proactive team player with strong inter-personal communication skills, attention to detail, and a strong desire to learn.
  • Ability to work effectively with virtual teams, independently and deliver results.
  • Interest in creating and nourishing interpersonal relationships with stakeholders and team members.
  • High-level of competence in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Must be enrolled in an undergraduate programme or recently graduated (e.g. International Relations, Economics, Administration, International Business, Engineering on relevant field, etc.).

Language requirements:

Language: English and Spanish
Level of language required: Excellent verbal and written skills.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
  • Experience or knowledge of the Retail and Food & Drink sector landscape in Mexico and the UK (or ability to gain knowledge quickly).
  • Experience or knowledge of database management and market research.
  • Experience or knowledge in customer service.
  • Innovative, curious mindset keen to take on that’s up for taking on new challenges.
