Job Description

The Soros Economic Development Fund (SEDF) is a nonprofit private foundation based in New York City. It is part of the network of charitable foundations created by investor and philanthropist George Soros. Established in 1997, the fund’s mission is to alleviate poverty and community deterioration by investing in local initiatives for economic development worldwide.

SEDF promotes business development and entrepreneurship including microfinance, small and medium enterprise development, and affordable housing as a strategy to building viable market economies and creating new jobs. Using local experts and resources, SEDF seeks to build and strengthen the local institutions that provide access to capital and provide support services for micro and small-business operations.

Range of Responsibilities The key responsibilities of the Investment Analyst are to provide support for the Soros Economic Development Fund (SEDF), and in particular:

  • Ability to analyze financial statements and perform complex financial modeling of potential and existing projects;
  • help structure innovative financings to microfinance institutions, housing lenders and other financial companies globally;
  • Provide program support to the Senior Investment Officers to monitor and supervise existing SEDF investments and projects.
  • Provide occasional program and administrative support to other projects.
  • Evaluate annual budgets and strategies, monthly transaction reports, audit reports, and other documentation from SEDF portfolio institutions.
  • Ability to act as liaison between the New York office and SEDF portfolio institutions, including field visits to SEDF portfolio institutions
  • Originate, promote and maintain relevant banking, MFI and investor relationships;
  • Perform feasibility analysis, on-site visits and investment recommendations;
  • Interpret portfolio data and provide technical assistance to the portfolio companies as needed;
  • Assist in developing new projects as needed;
  • Knowledge of microfinance industry and/or business development services would be a plus.

Job Requirements * BA in Finance, Accounting, Economics or related discipline; MBA or Parts 1&2 of CFA examination would be an advantage; * Three to five years experience in investment banking, commercial banking or analysis for an investment fund or microfinance institution; * Ability to run complex financial models and financial analysis calculations; * Fluency in at least one language other than English (Spanish or French preferred); * Working knowledge of the economic development industry and financing; * Familiarity with legal documentation; * Excellent interpersonal, written skills and ability to compose effective, thoughtful correspondence; * Excellent quantitative and critical thinking skills * Ability to work under pressure, within deadlines and in a small group environment; * Experience in understanding and interpreting business operations, management capabilities and practices as they relate to business financial requirements; * Willingness and ability to travel internationally when required * Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
