There are 5 levels in the team – Associate, Executive, Manager, Director & Team Leader. However, the team is very flat and people at all levels are involved in the real detail, and in representational work, both to Investment Committee and externally.
The Role
Purpose
- Infrastructure and Climate Funds (I&CF) sits within the Infrastructure and Climate Group (I&CG) which manages all of BII’s investment activities across the infrastructure and climate sub-sectors. I&CG is organised along product lines: (i) I&C Funds, (ii) Equity Investments, (iii) Project Finance and (iv) Energy Access & Efficiency.
- 1 permanent associate role is being recruited to join the I&C Funds team. This is an opportunity to join an enthusiastic, mission driven team that sources and manages fund, co-investments, and intermediated strategies in Africa and South Asia, with the mandate expanding to also include South East Asia for climate investments.
- Support senior investment professionals in the evaluation and management of portfolio funds (private equity funds and managed strategies), including actively monitoring the financial performance and development impact of the funds and their compliance with BII’s investment policy.
- Member of deal team that sources, analyses and completes new proposals to invest in funds, with the objective of selecting fund managers with the highest potential for financial and developmental impact.
- Reviewing all aspects of fund commitment agreements and assisting in the negotiation process, including working with BII’s Environmental and Social, Business Integrity, Development Impact, Legal and Finance teams in support of both fund selection and relationship management.
- Taking a pro-active approach to identify problems of under-performance and/or non-compliance at fund manager level, including Environmental, Social and Governance standards, and to propose tangible solutions.
- Maintaining and sharing up-to-date market knowledge/intelligence, geographic and sector mappings
Responsibilities
- Assessing investment performance and compliance to requirements/expectations
- Active engagement with the relevant fund managers (General Partners) and other investors (Limited Partners)
- Formally, through the review and analysis of quarterly fund reports; this may also include supporting the deal lead in advisory board meetings
- Informally, through regular dialogue with the fund managers, other investors, and other organizations active in the regional business community
- Supporting the work of the deal lead or other senior investment professionals on each fund relationship
- Monitoring and reporting on the financial performance, compliance, ESG, and any other issues that relate to existing portfolio investments
- Supporting analysis and creating frameworks for analysis under the guidance and supervision of other colleagues
- Evaluating new investment opportunities and maintaining market knowledge
- Assisting in the design and implementation of market scoping studies as relevant
- Support building an effective network in the funds business in BII’s markets
- Develop expertise on economic, political and social conditions in relevant countries in which BII is active
- Engage in the process to catalyse/incubate new private equity managers
- Assisting in the selection of funds which will meet BII’s objectives under its development grid, including utilising BII’s internal tools for mapping proposals
- Preparing investment proposals/papers, conducting due diligence, and presenting investment recommendations to BII’s Investment Committee
- Travelling to Africa, South Asia and South East Asia to conduct onsite meetings as required
- Assisting in the preparation of recommendations to BII’s Management Committee, Board of Directors, and Investment Committee
- Working with fund managers and other investors to achieve alignment of investment contracts and legal documents, including fee and incentive arrangements, financial metrics reporting, management company rights and investor protections
- Working closely with Environmental and Social, Business Integrity, Development Impact, Finance and Legal teams and, in conjunction with those teams, scoping their role in the investment process of each new proposal
The Candidate
Background, skills, aptitude
- Experience within financial services such as private equity, fund-of-funds, investment banking, advisory, or transaction services
- Exposure to emerging market finance, especially Africa or South Asia, is desirable
- Knowledge or experience of infrastructure or climate sectors is desirable
- Strong analytical, technical / valuation and research skills, including the ability to benchmark investment performance, analyse company reports, sector data, economic situations and relevant political events
- Report writing, proficient business communication and presentation skills are imperative
- Familiarity with diligence processes, financial terms and legal terms
- Ability to work to deadlines and manage time effectively
- An active interest in investing in developing countries
- Demonstrable professional approach and ability to develop relationships internally and externally
- Willingness to travel within Africa, South Asia and South East Asia Candidates should be strongly motivated by BII’s development mission and ideally demonstrate some commitment to development or social goals through previous executive or non-executive activity
