BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The SNV Renewable Energy (RE) sector has one overarching aim; to boost low carbon pro poor development while promoting energy efficiency and facilitating access to sustainable, clean and reliable energy sources for households & small enterprises and the development of a vibrant renewable energy sector with an adequate enabling environment.

In pursuing this aim, SNV has expanded the range of RE technologies and strengthened its market-based approach in Asia, African and Latin America. This expansion will continue to focus on Renewable Energy resources targeting three interventions areas for domestic and productive use: clean cooking, lighting and communication and agricultural processing. Under the broad banner of RE, SNV also situates its rapidly growing work in REDD+ and climate financing mechanisms.

SCOPE OF WORK and OBJECTIVES

As part of our corporate communication unit, SNV seeks a communications officer who will work closely with the Managing Director, the Global Sector Coordinator, Country Directors and Country Sector Leaders to improve both internal and external communications for the Renewable Energy sector.

Responsibilities

With guidance from the Core RE Team and the Corporate communication unit, the Junior Communication officer will:

  • Manage the SNV RE website and ensure it is up to date with regular news items, relevant publications and attractive stories about our work.
  • Contribute RE content to corporate publications such as the annual report, magazines, brochures, leaflets and video’s;
  • Increase SNV RE presence on social media and improve the use of social media by RE staff;
  • Ensure presence of SNV RE in partner or donor websites;
  • Ensure that relevant contacts are established with reporters of international media, potentially interested in items about renewable energy in developing countries;
  • Support SNV RE staff who represent SNV at global events through production of communication materials (like PPT) and advise on the best possible profiling;
  • Plan and implement one high profile event for the RE Sector;
  • Support proposal writing (for resource mobilization purposes) with texts about communication services and provide communication services in projects;
  • Support biogas, cookstoves and off grid solar groups in SNV with the production of compelling messages and success stories for internal knowledge sharing;
  • Promote the production of articles in renowned renewable energy publications.

REQUIRED BACKGROUND, EXPERIENCE and COMPETENCIES

  • Master’s Degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or in Sustainable development, Environmental studies, Energy or International relations;
  • A minimum of 2 years work experience in communications, preferably within an international development context;
  • Some working experience in developing countries;
  • Some knowledge of the Renewable Energy sector;
  • Ability work with a range of staff, consultants and partners on various locations;
  • A highly motivated, productive, creative personality with analytical skills and strong interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent communication (writing and oral) skills, with experience in profiling an organization in an international setting;
  • Proficiency in IT, with a good understanding of web design techniques and the use of various social media channels; knowledge of Drupal or Sharepoint 365 is an asset.
  • An eye for design. Knowledge of photo editing or design programmes is an asset.
  • Collaborative, proactive, outgoing and ability to work independently and in a team.

Languages: Fluent in English (preferably native speaker). Working knowledge of French and Spanish is an advantage.

Contract Duration: 1 year initially, full-time as well as part-time possible.

Desired start date: 1st of April 2014

Information on duty station

Duty station will be determined, but may be The Hague, the Netherlands or Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
