Job Description

The UK-PHRST Learning Design Manager is a pivotal post and will lead on instructional design, development of technical opportunities and delivery of remote, hybrid and online courses, while working cohesively with the team to achieve the wider set of UK-PHRST Capacity Strengthening strategic objectives.

The post-holder will co-create and deliver a dynamic, needs-responsive offer of professional development and learning activities, working in collaboration with partner organisations and UK-PHRST subject matter expert colleagues. They will enhance the design and delivery of methodological approaches, including the use of up-to-date tech platforms to deliver high quality, engaging, interactive courses, workshops, simulations and evaluation processes with partners.

As a learning and development designer, the postholder will have a sound knowledge of current recommended practices in web design and accessibility, as well as a multi-media skillset. Adept at applying learning design, with digital and visual principles, they will help to co-create courses and content that is engaging, creative, innovative and pedagogically sound. They will demonstrate their expertise and experience in the arenas of learning design to support continuous professional development and education, including the use of face-to face, remote, online and e-learning platforms, tailoring content to suit each of these delivery modes.

The post holder will work with subject matter experts in epidemiology, microbiology, and other public health disciplines. They will work in collaboration with in-country partners and teams (e.g., national organisations/institutes, Africa CDC, the WHO, etc) to identify, tailor, develop and deliver capacity strengthening initiatives that meets the stakeholder needs and preferences.

As the Learning Design Manager, your main responsibilities will include:

Education, Learning and Development

  • Provide expertise in learning design to enhance capacity strengthening activities through face-to-face, remote, hybrid, and e-learning platforms, with a remit to lead on planning and delivery of a suite of courses.
  • Utilise a range of approaches, such as interactive workshops, simulations and case studies, with the ability to adapt delivery to match requirements across subject matter disciplines, and availability of resource.
  • Use project management tools and skills to ensure productive coordination across teams, as well as managing some projects and activities independently.
  • Drawing on the expertise from across the Capacity Strengthening Team, embed educational design, delivery expertise, and monitoring, evaluation and learning into all activities.
  • Co-create tailored capacity strengthening initiatives working with partner organisations, and across professional disciplines, ensuring an engaging and flexible approach with experienced cultural awareness.
  • Translate stakeholder requirements and educational ideas into practical solutions, drawing from wider sector knowledge, products and materials to support UK-PHRST strategic objectives.
  • Provide technology and visual design creative support, such as for templates, graphics, illustrations, guidelines, reports and other documentation, as necessary.
  • Create materials to support course design and delivery, such as storyboards, scripts and production-ready content for video and web-based activities, as well as advice for production, ensuring high quality learner experience and tech standards.
  • Offer face-to-face, remote and hybrid dynamic learning opportunities live and additionally, will create e-learning modules and online interactive activities to deliver UK-PHRST programmes that enable flexible access (timing) for participants.
  • Create and maintain a new virtual learning environment (VLE) for the UK-PHRST, identifying opportunities for innovative, multi-media approaches to capacity strengthening activities, identifying external resources to support the development of the VLE.
  • Work with colleagues to define processes and workflows for content delivery, training team colleagues to manage activities on the VLE, ensuring that issues relating to copyright, intellectual property rights and data protection are considered in the production of content and activities.
  • Embed continuous monitoring, evaluation and learning processes to inform and improve capacity strengthening initiatives in real-time, as well as for future activities.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Educated to level 6 in a relevant subject (i.e. BA / BSc level) or able to demonstrate an equivalent level of knowledge and experience
  • Qualification (or equivalent experience) in instructional/education/learning design
  • Expertise and experience in learning design and delivery of capacity strengthening activities through face-to-face, remote, hybrid, as well as e-learning platforms for professional audiences, using a range of approaches (including, but not limited to, workshops, simulations and case studies)
  • Trained / accredited / experienced in the use of illustrator, graphics and data visualisation techniques
  • Experience of developing, maintaining, as well as managing the governance (security, good practice and legal regulations) of a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)
  • Experience in employing coaching and mentoring approaches
  • Excellent written, oral communication, listening, presenting and facilitator skills
  • Approachable team-player with a robust track-record of establishing strong stakeholder relationships, operating across organisations, disciplines and cultures
  • Ability to make judgements involving highly complex facts or situations, which require the analysis, interpretation and comparison of available options
  • Effective independent worker, with self-accountability for managing quality standards, deadlines, capacity and resources within constraints
  • Values-based leadership and management skills
  • Future orientated, operating strategically with a global perspective, contributing openly
  • Interest, willingness and ability to travel

Desirable

  • Postgraduate or professional qualification in teaching, education, or subject related to the role
  • Project Management qualification e.g., PRINCE2, Microsoft Project, or similar OR demonstrable equivalent level of knowledge and experience
  • Experience of researching sector-relevant best practice (globally - private and public sectors), and interpreting its transferability for implementation
  • Experience of commissioning and producing multi-media content, such as video, animation, audio, and interactive content, such as using e-learning software

Selection process details

This competition will involve an interview by video.
