Organizational Setting
The Office of Legal Affairs, which reports directly to the Director General, provides legal services of the highest possible standards to the Director General, the Secretariat and to the organs and bodies of the IAEA, as well as to Member States, regarding the implementation of the IAEA’s activities.
The Non-Proliferation and Policy Making Section provides legal advice and services to the Office of the Director General, the Department of Safeguards and to the Policy-Making Organs in support of issues related to safeguards and non-proliferation, and legislative assistance to Member States on such issues. It also provides advice on matters related to the Statute of the IAEA and the conduct of the meetings of the Board of Governors and the General Conference and their respective Rules of Procedure.
Main Purpose
Under the guidance of the Head of the Non-Proliferation and Policy-Making Section, the Legal Officer prepares legal opinions, legal instruments and documents, and provides legal advice on the application and interpretation of such instruments and documents.
Role
The Legal Officer is (1) a specialist, providing high quality professional inputs to the legal support provided by OLA mainly to the Department of Safeguards, Secretariat of the Policy-Making Organs, Director General’s Office for Coordination and the Director General (2) and advisor on the application and interpretation of legal instruments related to non-proliferation and safeguards.
