DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the general supervision of the Chief, Animal Production Service and the immediate supervision of the Senior Officer, Livestock Production Group, will contribute to activities related to animal nutrition and feeds. In particular, the incumbent will:
- participate in the design and implementation of the Division’s Regular Programme activities that support good farming/livestock/industry practices that relate to the development and utilization of feed resources, efficient animal nutrition, feed safety and address the associated technical and policy issues including the trade in animal feedstuffs;
- in collaboration with the Sub-regional Multi-disciplinary Teams and Regional Offices participate in the development, implementation and technical support of FAO’s Field Programme relating to the utilization of feed resources, feeding standards and improved animal nutrition; provide advice to Member Countries on the importance of efficient animal nutrition in their livestock development programmes;
- develop strategies to enhance and better utilize Member Countries’ available/potential feed resources and implement good feeding and nutritional practices;
- advise countries and the feed industry in developing and complying with feed safety/quality standards;
- contribute to and technically support appropriate supplementary/emergency feeding interventions for livestock in FAO emergency and/or rehabilitation programmes;
- contribute to the work of and participate in FAO’s interdisciplinary programmes, international and regional institutions, NGO networks and producer organisations as they relate to animal production and nutrition and feed safety;
- keep up-to-date and informed on relevant developments; design and conduct analytical studies on specific technical and policy issues affecting animal nutrition, feed resources and feed safety;
- plan, organize and participate in scientific and technical meetings; prepare and edit reports, manuals, guidelines and other specialized publications concerning the above;
- assist national institutions through the decentralised offices in planning/establishing training, extension, research and human resources development programmes for efficient animal nutrition and utilization of feed resources;
- collect and analyse appropriate data that contributes to the divisional livestock information systems;
- perform other related duties as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should meet the following:
- Advanced University Degree in Animal Production/Science with specialization related to animal nutrition
- Seven years of relevant experience in the development of feed resources and improved animal nutrition, which included working experience in a diverse range of developing countries or countries in transition
- Working knowledge of two of the following: English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge of the third language
SELECTION CRITERIA
Candidates will be assessed against the following:
- Extent and relevance of working experience in main livestock feeding systems in different regions of the world
- Relevance and level of academic qualifications
- Extent of knowledge of and experience in the application of improved animal nutrition
- Depth of understanding of the technical (nutritional), institutional and policy constraints affecting major livestock feeding systems in both developed and developing countries
- Extent of knowledge of and experience in project formulation and funding requirements of major multilateral and bilateral funding agencies
- Extent of experience in institution and capacity building in the livestock feed/production sector
- Quality of both oral and written communication skills on technical issues

- The length of appointment for internal FAO candidates will be established in accordance with applicable policies pertaining to the extension of appointments.
REMUNERATION
Level P-4 carries a net salary per year (inclusive of a variable element for post adjustment) from US$ 105,612 US$ 132,419 (without dependants) and from US$ 113,413 to US$ 143,020 (with dependants)
