Job Description

About the position

Namati’s mission is to build a robust, evidence-based global movement for legal empowerment. Continuous learning is essential to Namati’s fulfillment of our mission: we intentionally design our direct implementation programs as innovation labs, generating cutting-edge insights while we also solve problems on the front lines. Namati’s Global Programs team supports our CEO in generating comparative learning across Namati programs, drawing on data and experiences from the variety of contexts and thematic areas in which we work.

The “why” of legal empowerment work is clear: many of the most pressing questions in our field are the “hows.” For example, what are the most effective models for paralegal supervision and support? How can we engage affected communities in advocating for national policy change? Namati is searching for a Manager, Global Programs who will join our team and help us answer these tough questions. Working closely with the Director of Global Learning and Practice and Namati’s program teams, the Manager will help lead efforts to develop innovative approaches to cross-cutting themes. Potential areas of focus include paralegal training, methods for community empowerment, models for scale up, and revenue diversification.

Overall, the Manager will be responsible for the following:**

Program design

  • Support program teams to develop specific tools or materials when requested, for example a scoring tool for community-led assessments of health facility performance, or community education materials on the impacts of mining.
  • Identify insights from related fields that can be applied to legal empowerment, for example, how might best practices on support and supervision from community health worker programs apply to paralegal programs?
  • Identify key program insights and best practices based on data and facilitated discussions with teams, for example how we can strengthen our approach to community empowerment based on learning from client follow-up interviews and hosting a convening of paralegals to discuss strategies for promoting empowerment among active clients.
  • Support cross-program learning among program teams focused on different thematic issues (health, citizenship, land and environment) and working in different country contexts.
  • Design innovative approaches to cross-cutting programmatic issues like paralegal training, client empowerment, and the integration of gender as a theme.
  • Create materials for sharing insights with practitioners through the Global Legal Empowerment Network.

Research

  • Synthesize key insights from existing research to inform our approach.
  • Contribute to the design of research studies and development of appropriate methodologies to meet learning objectives.
  • Provide support to program teams in managing data collection and ensuring high data quality.
  • Analyze quantitative and qualitative data to distill actionable program recommendations.
  • Develop compelling materials for sharing results with diverse audiences, including practitioners, policy makers, and affected communities.

**Please note that the exact percentage composition across these two areas of work will be shaped by the profile and strengths of our selected candidate. If you are aligned with the overall role and have demonstrable interest and experience in one area over another, please be sure to address this in your application materials.

About the Organization

About Namati

Namati is dedicated to placing the power of law in the hands of people.

For billions of people around the world, the law is broken. It’s an abstraction -- or worse, a threat -- but not something we can use to exercise our basic rights.

Namati is building a global movement of grassroots advocates who empower people to understand, use, and shape the law. These “barefoot lawyers” form a dynamic, creative frontline that can squeeze justice out of even broken systems.

In the past four years, Namati and our partners have worked with over 65,000 clients to take on some of the greatest challenges of our times: protecting community lands, enforcing environmental law, and securing basic rights to healthcare and citizenship.

We track data on every case and use that information to advocate for systemic changes, like better policies for land governance in Liberia, environmental regulation in India, and healthcare delivery in Mozambique.

And we're joining forces for change. Namati convenes the Global Legal Empowerment Network -- over 1500+ groups and 5,000+ individuals from 150 countries learning from one another and bringing justice to communities in every part of the world.

Our work has gained recognition. Namati and the Global Legal Empowerment Network were recognized with the prestigious Skoll Award in 2016. Honoring CEO Vivek Maru as a fellow, Ashoka called ours the “best law-for-all model we’ve seen.” We’ve been published and featured in the Guardian, the New York Times, and Forbes. And we’ve had some hefty supporters, including an advisory board with leaders like Amartya Sen, Mo Ibrahim, Fazle Abed, and Madeleine Albright.

As we move into our next phase, we’re growing our global team of passionate, results-oriented, big-hearted advocates, united by a common mission and a strong culture:

  • Our mission is our North Star. It’s why we all wake up every day. We pour our hearts into this work.
  • We’re innovators and changemakers. We are a young, energetic social enterprise and we know that our work is urgent. We believe in being nimble and doing what works.
  • Our work makes real, tangible, measurable progress in people’s lives. We take abstract concepts – rule of law and human rights – and make them concrete, helping people find solutions that improve their lives every day.
  • We walk our talk. Our movement is about legal empowerment and we bring this spirit of empowerment and collaboration to all our partnerships. We hold humility as a core value: we lead when necessary and follow when necessary.
  • We are a truly global organization. Our offices are located in Delhi, Freetown, Maputo, Washington DC, and Yangon, and our staff come from all corners of the world. We are united by our common mission.
  • We see our people as our most valuable resource. We bring on individuals of the highest caliber and character and we mentor, train, and support our staff.
  • We hold one another in the highest esteem. Our work relationships are built on deep abiding respect and love.

We would love to have you on our team. Please join us.
