Fiji Program Support Facility

Australia’s Support to Fiji’s Education Sector program works in close partnership with the Ministry of Education (MoE). It focuses on strengthening literacy and numeracy outcomes, inclusive education, evidence-based decision-making, and teacher professional development.

The Program will contribute to the strategic priorities of MoE that support quality learning and teaching through targeted support including demand driven technical assistance, grants to support analytics and partnerships. The end of program goal is ‘to help improve the literacy and numeracy skills of all children in Fiji by supporting the Government of Fiji to put in place systemic conditions for promoting high-quality, gender-responsive, inclusive, evidence-based and resilient education.

Key responsibilities

  • Review current curriculum for Mathematics for Years 9 – 13 against proposed revisions to scope and sequence and syllabus
  • Work closely with the Facility Literacy and Numeracy Team to ensure continuity between Primary and Secondary curriculum outcomes and ensure alignment and consistency across all documents
  • Develop a Training and Professional Development Plan, including advice on the development of training modules in support of the revised Mathematics curriculum
  • Develop standardized teacher guides to support the implementation of the curriculum
  • Provide advice to MOE on school-based and systemic assessment tools, and monitoring tools to track student outcomes, and provide advice to CDAU to adapt and revise programs including professional development, as required
  • Support the MOE Senior Education Officer, Secondary, to convene the Secondary Curriculum Executive Committee where stakeholders, under the leadership of the Permanent Secretary, review progress of curriculum development and implementation

Selection criteria

  • A relevant post-graduate qualification such as a Master of Education degree specializing in curriculum development (Mathematics) or related area and a relevant first degree preferably in Mathematics or Education
  • Extensive experience in designing education curriculum and assessment for the secondary levels of schooling with a specific focus in Mathematics
  • Evidence of a theoretical background in current curriculum and assessment theory and practice, including competency based or outcomes-based approaches for learning and assessment
  • Understanding of MOE and DFATs Child Protection Policy and a willingness to incorporate this policy into Program planning and support activities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best development practice in school level curriculum issues in developing countries is essential, including specialist technical areas of literacy and of numeracy
