Job Description

National and International Short-Term Experts for the GIZ Project Component “(Green) Technology Transfer, Innovation and Diffusion” in South Africa

Project tasks:

The component 2 “Technology Transfer, Innovation and Diffusion” of the GIZ project “Skills Development for Climate and Environmental Business – Green Jobs” in South Africa has the following objective: The network of Technology Centres contributes to the improvement of sectoral innovation systems and training for industry focusing on green technologies.

During the three year programme the component will focus on:

  • selection of eligible green projects of Technology Centres
  • capacity development of selected Technology Centres and Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) Infrastructure & Planning Business Unit
  • Skills Development for students, industry partners and technology centre staff
  • documentation and dissemination of best practices

Project location: based in Pretoria, South Africa.

Potential operation time: between 05/2012 ‐ 02/2015

The Short-Term Experts should have the following general qualifications:

  • University degree in a relevant area e.g. economics, business administration, entrepreneurial studies, development studies, public administration or similar
  • working experience in the field of innovation systems, technology transfer, enterprise development, skills development and/or environmental technologies
  • English: excellent command written and spoken.

The international or national short-term experts should be well qualified and experienced in one or more of the following thematic fields:

  • Development of conceptional frameworks on green technologies and green innovations
  • Monitoring and Evaluation with a focus on green technologies (including energy and resource efficiency audits), Implementation of baseline studies
  • Development of innovation systems for green technologies (including energy efficiency, renewable energy, resource efficiency (including water management) and waste management)
  • Development and implementation of strategies for (green) technology diffusion e.g. through sector appraisals and networking events
  • Greening curricula and skills development for technology centers, universities and industries.
  • Development and implementation of trainings, cross learning workshops (in South Africa) or study tours (in Germany) about the promotion of green technologies
  • Documentation and dissemination of best practices in the field of green technologies
  • Knowledge in Rapid Appraisal of Local Innovation Systems (RALIS)

The following qualifications are not necessarily required but would be an asset:

  • Working experience in development cooperation
  • The ability to speak other South African national languages or German would be an added advantage but is not a pre-requisite
  • Good knowledge of the South African context
  • GIZ (German International Cooperation, formerly GTZ) experience would be an asset
  • Being familiar with Capacity WORKS would be an asset
