How can you make a difference?

The intern will work under the guidance of the Social and Behaviour Change (SBC) Specialist team and contribute to community health programming, with a strong focus on reaching ethnic communities, particularly the Hmong population. The role will support UNICEF’s SBC work across health, immunization, child marriage prevention, and parenting for adolescents.

Description of Duties:

  • Supporting coordination with the Lao Women’s Union, Lao Front for National Development, and district-level partners to strengthen community engagement efforts in Hmong and other ethnic communities, especially on immunization and prevention of child marriage.
  • Drafting Lao-language communication materials—including articles, brochures, and community messaging—that promote positive parenting for adolescents, vaccine confidence, and healthy behaviours in culturally appropriate ways.
  • Liaising with UNICEF programme sections to collect and consolidate key information, stories, and visual content related to community health, adolescent development, and ethnic-inclusive SBC interventions.
  • Assisting with the planning, logistics, and preparation of materials for community outreach and engagement activities, including those related to routine immunization, zero-dose children, adolescent health, and social norms change.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor to support the communications team.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Minimum requirements:

  • Education: Undertaking a degree or recent graduate in a relevant area, e.g., Communications, International Relations, Public Relations, Public Health, Development and Planning, or other related field, with excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.
  • Skills: Fluency in Lao and English is essential, including excellent drafting skills as well as oral presentation skills.
  • Language Requirements: Proficient in at least one of UNICEF’s working languages: Fluency in English AND Laotian (Mandatory)
Desirables:
  • Knowledge of ethnic minority language(s) would be advantageous.
  • Ability to express clearly and concisely ideas and concepts in written and oral form and to produce reports in a timely manner.
  • Ability to cope with stressful and difficult conditions and political/cultural sensitivity.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with a team in an international, multicultural and interdisciplinary environment and establish harmonious and effective working relationships both within and outside the organization.
  • Familiar with and understand Lao national and/or economic development issues.
  • Familiar with multi-culture environment would be an asset.
  • Relevant experience at country level, particularly in development, fragile settings and humanitarian contexts.
