Job Description

Chemonics seeks a long-term office manager/accountant (OM/A), who will based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for the ongoing Famine Early Warning System Network (FEWS NET) project. The OM/A is responsible for all financial matters relating to the project, including managing accounting transactions and books, monitoring budget expenditures, and ensuring proper financial reporting. The OM/A will work under the supervision of the local national technical manager and in coordination with the home office in Washington, D.C. Some travel within Ethiopia and Sub-Saharan Africa may be required. All candidates must already be authorized to work in Ethiopia. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintain petty cash transactions, reconcile petty cash balances, maintain bank balances, and request funds through wire transfers from the home office
  • Enter accounting transactions into Abacus Software daily and respond, without delays, to home-office field accounting and project management questions or concerns
  • Supervise all project procurements and the inventory/maintenance of all equipment, materials, and supplies necessary to the execution of project activities
  • Review all vendor invoices for accuracy, monitor vendor balances, and issue and send checks
  • Conduct payroll, monitor and track all personnel benefits, verify expense reports, and report taxes to the Ministry of Finance
  • Contribute to the preparation of contractually required financial reports, as well as any other financial reports required by Chemonics
  • Provide oversight and supervision to office administrative assistant and drivers​

Qualifications:

  • B.A. in accounting, finance, or related field; master’s preferred
  • At least five years of experience in accounting and financial and procurement management
  • Advanced skills in MS Office (Word and Excel) required
  • Ability to prioritize work assignments and exercise professional judgment required
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
  • Excellent speaking and writing skills in English required, as well as excellent interpersonal skills
