About the Organization

The HALO Trust is a non-political, non-religious NGO that specializes in the removal of the hazardous debris of war. HALO is the world’s oldest and largest humanitarian landmine clearance organization and currently employs over 8,000 deminers in Afghanistan, Abkhazia, Angola, Cambodia, Colombia, Georgia, Kosovo, Mozambique, Nagorno Karabakh, Sri Lanka and Somaliland. HALO’s largest program is in Afghanistan where they have over 3,700 Afghan staff working on mine clearance and the disposal of conventional munitions preventing these weapons from being used to make Improvised Explosive Devices (IED). The beneficiaries of mineclearance are invariably the poorest of the poor: internally displaced persons and other disempowered groups. Mineclearance restores farmland and allows them to return to productive and dignified economic activity, which in turn brings stability to post-conflict areas. Since 1988, HALO has destroyed 1.3 million landmines, 12 million items of larger-caliber ordnance, and 50 million bullets. These efforts have returned over 372,000 acres of safe land - an area more than nine times the size of Washington, DC - to poor communities around the world.
