Ph. D – Scholarship in Development Studies

Land rights and nature conservation in KwaZulu Natal

Noragric is engaged in education, research, institutional collaboration and assignments in international environment and development studies. The Department offers a Ph.D and a Masters degree programme in Development Studies, a Masters degree programme in International Environmental Studies and a Bachelors in Development Studies (Please visit for more information) The Department of International Environment and Development Studies (Noragric), Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB), invites applications for a 4-year Ph.D scholarship in Development Studies.

We invite proposals for fieldwork-based projects that examine property regimes and perceptions of land, nature and conservation in KwaZulu Natal. Proposals should aim at combining analyses of land rights with discourses of «nature», «environment» and «landscapes» as these have been expressed historically. The project will form part of existing research at Noragric.

Applicants must hold a research-based masters degree with a GPA of B (or its equivalent) or above in development studies, environment and development studies, political science, sociology, anthropology or a relevant field. Ability to use English as a working language and in daily communication is a prerequisite. Research and working experience in developing countries will be considered an additional qualification.

The candidates will be evaluated on the basis of their academic qualifications, the quality of the draft research proposal and previous research and other relevance experience. They may be called for an interview as a part of the evaluation. The selected candidate will be appointed as a doctoral research fellow starting on level 41 of the Norwegian state salary scale (NOK 310,700 per annum) for a period of four years of which 25 percent will be used for obligatory academic work for the department.

The doctoral research fellow will be supervised by Dr. Knut G. Nustad. The Departments Ph. D programme consists of mandatory and elective courses with oral and written examinations and a major research component. The student is also expected to actively participate in the academic activities of the scientific group to which he or she is assigned.
