Main Purpose of the Role
The British Embassy Helsinki is part of the UK government’s global network representing British political, economic, and consular interests overseas. We are seeking a Policy Intern for a fixed-term 6-month position. This is an excellent opportunity for someone in the early stages of their career with an interest in policy, politics, and public service.
Working within the embassy’s political team, you will help advance the UK’s objectives in its relationship with Finland, while gaining hands-on experience in geopolitics, international relations, and diplomacy.
To succeed in this role, you should have an interest in UK culture and values, Finnish politics and society, and be flexible in taking on tasks ranging from ministerial summits to team administration. Curiosity, creativity, and energy are key—expertise in all areas is not required, but experience in at least one relevant field is beneficial.
During your internship, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of topics including bilateral relations, EU affairs, foreign policy, economics, defence/security, and human rights.
Key Responsibilities
Reporting and Analysis (50%)
- Monitor and analyse political developments in Finland, including parliamentary activity, policy changes, and EU dynamics.
- Provide clear, insightful reporting to support the embassy’s political team and FCDO headquarters in London.
Meetings and Lobbying (30%)
- Develop contacts and relationships across the Finnish system, including Parliament and government.
- Support the organisation of meetings with decision-makers and advocate for UK priorities.
Administrative Support (10%)
- Assist the political team with tasks such as booking venues, arranging transport, and other logistics.
Ad-Hoc Support (10%)
- Provide support for other occasional tasks across the embassy as required.
Essential Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
- Relevant higher education degree (e.g., bachelor’s or master’s), recently completed or nearing completion.
- Fluent in Finnish and English (C1 level) in both written and spoken communication.
- Good understanding of current affairs and strong interest in foreign policy.
- Ability to work collaboratively, adapt to changing priorities, and remain resilient under pressure.
- Strong organisational and time-management skills.
- In-depth knowledge of Finnish politics and society.
Desirable Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
- Previous experience in a political or policy-focused role.
- Familiarity with UK politics, culture, and government systems.
- Experience working with international organisations.
