Job Description – Political Intern
Who We Are
The British Embassy in Bucharest is part of the United Kingdom’s global diplomatic network and represents British political, economic, and consular interests in Romania.
Main Purpose of the Internship
We are recruiting a Political Intern to join our Political Team for 12 months. The successful candidate will provide analysis on Romania’s domestic and foreign policy, engage on human rights topics, and provide day-to-day support to the team, with opportunities to lead their own projects and events.
The intern will receive mentoring from a British diplomat and have exposure to high-level events. Access to training and learning opportunities is provided, including lunchtime talks, specialist briefings, peer-to-peer learning, and potential familiarisation visits to London.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Work with UK and local colleagues and gain understanding of how an Embassy operates
- Support reporting on internal politics and foreign affairs
- Conduct background research on human rights and other relevant policy topics
- Assist in arranging visits for UK officials to Romania
- Support the organisation and delivery of events and meetings, including taking accurate notes
- Attend and report on political conferences and seminars
- Compile and analyse political news
- Manage political and NGO engagement lists
- Support the team in delivering projects, with opportunities to lead individual initiatives
- Translate documents and communications from English to Romanian and vice versa as required
- Provide cover for the Head of the Ambassador’s Office and contribute to diplomacy in action alongside senior diplomats
Essential Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
- Full proficiency in Romanian and English (written and spoken, minimum C1 level according to CEFR)
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Good organisational skills and ability to communicate with diverse audiences
- Demonstrated research experience in a professional or academic environment
- Interest in learning and developing on the job
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
Desirable Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
- Degree in humanities or social sciences (Political Science, International Relations, Law, International Economics, or similar)
- Confidence in using Microsoft AI tools
- Experience in organising events or official visits
