The African Union (AU), established as a unique Pan African continental body, is charged with spearheading Africa's rapid integration and sustainable development by promoting unity, solidarity, cohesion and cooperation among the peoples of Africa and African States as well as developing a new partnerships worldwide. Its Headquarters is located in Addis Ababa the capital city of Ethiopia.

In seeking to achieve this objective, the African Union Commission (AUC) intends to build its capacity to deliver, among others, the implementation of its organizational structure by filling up vacancies.

The Commission is therefore inviting applicants who are citizens of Member States of the African Union to apply for position of Political Officer (Peace and Security Council).

Supervisor: Secretary to the Peace & Security Council

Main Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Secretary to the Peace and Security Council, the Political Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

•Assist in servicing meetings of the Peace and Security Council;

•Provide all secretarial and logistical services to the Peace & Security Council (PSC);

•Assist in preparing periodic administrative and programme reports of the PSC;

•On a regular basis, engage in monitoring the stream of data and information transmitted to the Secretariat from the Divisions of the PSD in an attempt to identify and propose appropriate entry point for the AU Commission or the AU Peace and Security Council;

•Assist in promoting and disseminating information through seminars, symposia and conferences, as well as the electronic media, of the work of the Peace & Security Directorate;

•Research on issues related to peace and security and promote cooperation with African and international institutions in Africa;

•Monitor the implementation of Decisions of the Peace and Security Council;

•Perform other tasks as may be assigned by supervisors.

Knowledge, skills and experience

•A degree in Political Science, International Relations, Government Public Relations or Law;

•At least five (5) years experience working in the Diplomatic Service, UN or UN Agencies or lecturing/research experience at a University in the field of Political Science;

•Must have excellent speaking and drafting skills, and excellent knowledge of current political, social and economic developments in Africa and the World;

•Must have capacity for creativity and initiative as well as capacity to work under pressure;

Language Requirement: Proficiency in one of the African Union working languages. Knowledge of one other working languages would be an advantage.

Age Requirement: candidates between the age of 35 and 50 years would be preferred

Tenure of Appointment: The appointment will be made on a fixed term contract for a period of three (3) years, of which the first twelve months will be considered as a probationary period. Thereafter, the contract will be for a period of two years renewable, subject to satisfactory performance.

REMUNERATION: Indicative basic salary of US$23, per annum plus other related entitlements- e.g. Post adjustment (40% of basic salary), Housing allowance ($12, per annum), education allowance (75% of tuition and other education related expenses for every eligible dependent up to a maximum of US$6, per child per annum), etc for internationally recruited staff of the commission.
