Job Description

ABA ROLI has received a grant from the Open Society Institute’s Criminal Justice Initiative to partner with the legal aid program of the Catholic Justice and Peace Commission (JPC) and Prison Fellowship Liberia’s (PFL) prison monitoring program. The capacity-building project works to systematically reduce pre-trial detention periods in Monrovia Central Prison. The project complements the Magistrate Sitting Program currently being implemented by the Judiciary of Liberia, which brings six local Magistrates to Monrovia Central Prison to conduct “fast-track hearings” to process pre-trial detainees.

As part of ABA ROLI’s Pre-Trial Detention (PTD) Program in Liberia, the intern will work closely with the JPC and PFL. In particular, the intern will provide:

– Support to the legal aid team in developing, analyzing and maintaining their case records electronic database, including working with case records to develop findings and subsequent recommendations about the statistics applying to prolonged pre-trial detainees in Monrovia Central Prison;

– Support to the legal aid team to identify and assess eligible pre-trial detainees in the prison to be processed in the “fast-track” Magistrate Court hearings held weekly in the prison;

– Support to the prison monitoring team in developing effective outreach and communication strategies with pre-trial detainees accused of minor crimes or misdemeanors in Monrovia Central Prison to sensitize them about their rights and their eligibility to be processed through the “fast-track” Magistrate Court hearings held weekly in the prison compound;

– Monitoring of the “fast-track” Magistrate Court hearings held weekly in the prison compound and providing support to the PTD team to report on Court hearing challenges and irregularities;

– Support to the legal aid team in developing community sensitization strategies about the rights of pre-trial detainees; and

- - Where needed, the intern will attend stakeholder meetings, attend and assist in facilitating team meetings and workshops, and assist in providing administrative support to ABA ROLI’s PTD Program Manager.

The ideal candidate will be currently enrolled in or have recently graduated from a master’s program or law school. A PTD intern should have excellent research, writing, editing and data analysis skills, be fluent in English and have excellent skills in the use of MS Office. This position requires that the intern be organized and detail-oriented, be able to work in a group as well as independently, and have strong communication skills.

Desirable, but not required:

- experience in developing a searchable database using Excel, Access or other software

- experience working and/or living in West Africa
