Assignment Background

The Solar Nigeria Programme (SNP) implemented by Adam Smith International is a UKAID funded programme focused on scaling up the use of solar products in Nigeria. SNP has two private sector workstreams focused on i) household solar products and ii) solar for commercial & industrial use.

Since 2015 SNP has awarded grants to capable solar companies in order to stimulate the market for solar energy. These grants have been instrumental in supporting the growth and expansion of national and international solar companies in Nigeria. SNP is seeking a Private Sector Lead to oversee the evaluation of grantee performance; address remaining market constraints; and share lessons learned on the programme.

Assignment Objectives

The Private Sector Lead will be expected to:

  • Oversee the disbursement of remaining grant funding;
  • Oversee the portfolio of Grantees and their performance; keep ASI and DFID advised of the portfolio status; Initiate and propose to ASI/DFID changes or corrective actions as needed;
  • Identify and document Solar Nigeria lessons and communicate these to DFID and wider audiences;
  • Identify and assess the most significant remaining barriers to market sale, with a focus on the medium-term outlook for the challenge of assessing and providing finance to SMEs in Nigeria for the provision of financed solar;
  • Review grantee performance quarterly and periodically interview senior management of key grantees;
  • Input in to Quarterly/Annual reviews;
  • Prepare M&E numbers as provided by M&E team.

Requirements

General:

  • Experience with Donor funded programmes
  • Demonstrable client management experience
  • Experience working in African countries
  • Willingness to travel and spend 30-40% of time in Nigeria

Specific:

  • Advanced data modelling and analytical skills
  • Knowledge of Private Markets as it relates to the renewable energy sector, specifically solar products
  • 10+ years of demonstrated experience in working in the renewable energy sector particularly in developing countries
  • Experience producing communications pieces for diverse audiences
  • Experience managing portfolio of projects
