Vital Strategies is excited to be part of a new consortium formed to strengthen air pollution mitigation and exposure reduction systems in selected regions of India, contributing to a cleaner environment and healthier population. Vital Strategies will lead on health-related activities within this transdisciplinary initiative.

Vital Strategies is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Manager – Environmental Health to be located in New Delhi. S/he will actively collaborate with a team of air quality and health stakeholders and experts, including environmental health scientists, epidemiologists, air quality advocates, public health practitioners, and communications specialists and work with a wide range of partner organizations including high-level and middle-level civil servants in India.The Manager, Environmental Health will be responsible for maintaining key stakeholder relationships at national and state levels, facilitating and coordinating technical assistance, contributing to project management direction, maintaining regular communications, monitoring, and reporting on progress. S/he will also provide guidance to city-level coordinators as they manage local strategic partnerships. This role is ideal for experienced managers working in the public health space who aspire to develop new skills and gain experience coordinating complex projects within a transdisciplinary team of colleagues.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work closely with central, state and city government focal points, as well as strategic civil society partners to insert air quality into ongoing health promotion activities, including sensitization of health sector to the impact of air quality on health;
  • Work closely with state and city government focal points and strategic technical partners to better integrate health into air quality management, including integration of local health data to air quality dashboards and management;
  • Support project start-up, recruitment, contracting, and procurement activities;
  • Develop and refine, jointly with city focal points and consortium members, project goals, budgets, timelines, and milestones;
  • Coordinate and monitor implementation of key project activities
  • Coordinate and/or directly provide technical assistance to city stakeholders as relevant;
  • Support conceptualization, convening, and/or implementation of stakeholder workshops, trainings, and awareness generation activities;
  • Partner with technical and communications staff to provide additional assistance as needed;
  • Assist with other Vital Strategies duties and ad hoc requests as specified by supervisor

Qualifications and Experience

Education and degree

  • MBBS or Master’s degree in public health or with relevant experience of working closely with government partners in public health implementation programmes.
  • a relevant field of study or equivalent experience/education

Skills & abilities

  • Demonstrated project management skills, with the ability to make sound, informed judgements;
  • Understanding of public health and related policy interventions including but not limited to: injury prevention and non-communicable diseases;
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills, including professional proficiency in English and Hindi;
  • Strong communication skills, with demonstrated ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external partners;
  • Ability to produce polished deliverables unaided and with minimal supervision;
  • Experience navigating India’s health system at central, state, and local government levels, including familiarity with process of national formulation and local implementation of national health programs, e.g. National Health Mission and Ayushman Bharat.

Desired Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive professional experience in public policy, urban health or public health, including experience with project management life cycle;
  • Experience implementing complex programs and/or projects in public health;
  • Detail-orientated self-starter with a positive attitude and willingness to learn;
  • Demonstrated representational experience in professional settings.
  • Prior experience managing public/private partnerships at central, state, and/or local levels;
  • Understanding of gender and social inclusion considerations for the Indian context;
  • Experienced in working collaboratively and remotely with internal and external team members to meet expectations and deliver the necessary assistance in a timely manner;
  • Genuine commitment to the mission and vision of Vital Strategies.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work flexibly with colleagues across time zones
  • Willing to travel semi-regularly to assist with on-site engagement in participating cities as needed

Additional Information:

  • The Manager will be a full-time employee for Vital Strategies India office, based remotely to start. Please note this position will be on a two year fixed term agreement with possibility of a renewal.
  • The Senior Manager will report to the Senior Epidemiologist, Environmental Health at Vital Strategies
  • The Manager will be provided with necessary equipment for the duration of the project
