The Open Society Foundations works to build vibrant and inclusive democracies whose governments are accountable and open to the participation of all people. We are active in more than 120 countries, making us the world’s largest private funder of independent groups working for justice, democratic governance, and human rights.
The Open Society University Network (OSUN) is a global network of educational institutions that integrates learning and the advancement of knowledge—in the social sciences, the humanities, the sciences and the arts, on undergraduate and graduate levels—across geographic and demographic boundaries, promotes civic engagement on behalf of open societies, and expands access to higher education for underserved communities. The OSUN team at the Open Society Foundations supports the global network in advancing its strategies, fostering and sustaining collaboration across the network, and working to strengthen the quality and effectiveness of the institution.
OSUN is a companion initiative to the Ideas Workshop - a new hub for critical thinking and inquiry at the Open Society Foundations, offering space for exploration of speculative, “over the horizon” ideas and heterodox viewpoints – and sits within the Education and Ideas Collaborative. Although primarily engaging on OSUN, the Program Officer is also expected to supply and be a part of Education and Ideas Collaborative team efforts.

The Program Officer maintains the OSUN grant making portfolio and related communications with grantees and project leaders. Responsibilities include annual grant planning working with the OSUN Division Director, assessing grant proposals, writing grant recommendations, conducting organizational assessments, negotiating project budgets and contracts, and undertaking periodic reviews of progress with grantees, including site visits.
