Our Sexual and Reproductive Health team is a leader in adapting innovative health products and services for women and girls—across health areas, levels of the health system, and geographies. Our work prioritizes approaches that enable women and girls to become users of evidence-based, supported, and convenient self-care options—including contraceptive self-injection.
PATH seeks a Project Director for the DMPA-SC Access Collaborative, a global initiative funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation and led by PATH in collaboration with John Snow, Inc. (JSI). Since 2017, the Access Collaborative has been working with ministries of health and partners across sectors in more than 20 countries to expand women’s contraceptive options and access through introduction and scale-up of the self-injectable product DMPA-SC. With many countries at a tipping point for scale-up and advancing self-injection as an evidence-based self-care option, the new Director will play a key role in continuing to deliver the Access Collaborative’s critical functions. At the same time, this leader will move the team into an exciting new phase focused on supporting countries to realize self-injection scale-up goals and monitor progress, applying service data to strengthen accessibility and availability across the global family planning market. In addition, the Director will engage with the global FP community to ensure that lessons learned and tools from the initiative are applied to strengthening systems for introduction and scale-up of novel innovations for women and girls more broadly, as well as future platforms for market coordination.
The Project Director for the DMPA-SC Access Collaborative is expected to set a positive tone for the entire project and inspire staff to achieve objectives and outcomes in the context of a dynamic family planning space. They will be responsible for project strategy and oversight, partner relationship management and external representation, donor relationship management, synthesizing and sharing project learnings and impacts, and must lead with clear vision and strong project management skills. This position reports directly to PATH’s Deputy Director of Sexual and Reproductive Health.
Responsibilities:
Overall project oversight
Work collaboratively with PATH and JSI leaders to set strategic direction for the project and translate strategy into action plans that prioritize continuous learning and adaptive management.
Maintain overall accountability for all project outcomes and finances, ensuring that high-quality project outputs are delivered on time and within budget and encouraging appropriate course-correction.
Work closely with team members and external partners to identify and manage potential critical issues affecting product access and project risks, keeping program leadership and donors clearly informed about risks and contingencies.
Relationship management
Manage relationships and facilitate collaboration with a broad array of donors and external partners on shared scale-up goals and common objectives, including serving as a thought partner and advisor on strategic issues and development of joint solutions for programmatic/operational barriers to DMPA-SC and self-injection scale-up; convene regular coordination meetings (e.g., technical assistance partners, DMPA-SC Operations Group).
Lead all aspects of relationship with JSI, ensuring alignment between PATH and JSI’s contributions to project goals and deliverables and fostering collaboration across experts from both organizations to facilitate team members’ and partners’ access to appropriate technical and management resources.
Lead monthly meetings and reporting, conduct semi-annual project reviews, and author annual project reports for project funders.
External visibility and dissemination of project learnings
Ensure quality, consistency, and timeliness of project outputs, communications, and cross-country exchanges to catalyze data-driven decisions, progress, and learning on DMPA-SC and self-injection scale-up, as we well as self-care and new contraceptive product introduction efforts globally.
Represent the project at partner meetings, events and conferences, including the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition membership meeting, the International Conference on Family Planning, and others.
Team management
Manage and mentor diverse project team members, including several direct reports in different locations, to successfully plan, coordinate and execute activities in line with project goals and workplans. Enable professional development and ensure a high functioning dynamic team environment across matrixed organizations.
Oversee the planning and execution of project work, including ensuring that the work streams of multiple teams are on track, and playing a key internal leadership role to ensure efficient management of donor resources.
Required skills and experience:
Master’s degree in public health or a related field plus a minimum of eight years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience in global family planning or reproductive health required, including familiarity with FP supply and delivery data.
Experience analyzing or shaping global markets for new FP/RH technologies and introducing global health products across the total market/in the private sector desired.
Exceptional problem solving, bridge building, and diplomacy abilities paired with an entrepreneurial spirit. Proven track record building and sustaining effective partnerships with diverse public and private stakeholders across geographies, including an ability to bring together diverse views and facilitate discussion on complex issues to drive results.
Superior project leadership skills in global health or development projects in low-resource settings; experience managing and motivating virtual teams with members located in multiple countries and time zones.
Proven experience in applying adaptive or other management techniques to achieve strong results within budget and time constraints; experience in managing change and risks and leading contingency planning.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, including demonstrated representational experience in professional and global fora; French proficiency desired.
Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office and project management tools and applications required.
Ability to travel domestic and international an estimated 25% of the time.
Must have legal authorization to work in the United States.
