Job Description

Work Location: Remote or in person

Expected Duration: Six (6) months, pending the needs of the office and the availability of the intern.

Desired Start Day: As soon as possible / early March 2026.

Duties and Responsibilities Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Office of the Director (OD), United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) in Vienna, Austria. The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer, Partnerships, Office of Director UNOOSA.

The Office of the Director (OD) is responsible for supporting the Office’s overall direction, administration and management, leading external relations and public information activities, overseeing coordination and cooperation with entities involved in space-related activities, the maintenance of the United Nations Register of Objects Launched into Outer Space and the implementation of assigned partnerships, initiatives and activities, among which:

  • World Space Forum
  • Space for Women
  • Space Economy
  • Space for Youth
  • Space for Climate Action
  • Promoting Space Sustainability
  • Enhancing International Expertise in Registration of Space Objects

The internship is UNPAID and interns work five days per week (full time - 40 hours).

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background;

The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Associate Public Information Officer, Office of the Director, UNOOSA. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

1. Public Information & Written Outputs
  • Prepare a range of written outputs for the Office, including background papers, briefing notes, factsheets, one-pagers, brochures, sections of reports, publications, website content, and other public-facing materials.
  • Contribute to drafting speeches, statements, presentations, and talking points for the Director for major UN meetings, global conferences, space-related entities, and meetings of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) and its subsidiary bodies.
  • Support the implementation of outreach activities and public information campaigns originating from the Office of the Director and programme teams.
  • Assist with communications related to capacity-building initiatives and events, including preparation of background materials and promotional content.
2. Social Media & Digital Communications
  • Draft and publish social media content across the Office’s platforms, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and adherence to UN guidelines.
  • Proactively generate ideas for social media content aligned with the Office’s strategic priorities, campaigns, and key moments (events, launches, international days, etc.).
  • Source or coordinate the creation of visual assets, maintain content calendars, and support periodic analytics tracking.
3. Media Relations Support
  • Track incoming media requests, monitor media coverage, and maintain internal logs.
  • Compile media mentions and relevant news coverage for internal reporting and support background research and preparation of media-related materials.
4. Programme & Administrative Support
  • Draft supporting materials for programme planning, budget, fundraising activities, and administrative requirements.
  • Support with onsite conferences, meetings and in-person events where applicable (for interns based in Vienna or working in person).
  • Perform other tasks as required in support of the Office’s work.
Qualifications/Special Skills

The basic education required is HS Diploma. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.

Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme.

Be computer literate in standard software applications; proficiency in preparing spreadsheets.

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.

Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
