Main Activities and Responsibilities

The portfolio of duties outlined below may vary from time to time in accordance with the academic expectations of the role, and as agreed at your annual Performance and Development Review (PDR).

Education
Contribute to the design of the course, including overall vision, structure and learning outcomes.
Draw on expertise in travel medicine, migrant health, epidemiology, global health, and infectious/tropical diseases to ensure accuracy and relevance of course content.
Ensure that current research and case studies are embedded into teaching materials to strengthen the link between research and practice.
Develop and incorporate a range of novel teaching and learning approaches, such as branching/decision-tree scenarios to simulate clinical decision-making, short educational videos and podcasts, interactive e-learning modules, and associated formative and summative assessments.
Ensure alignment of the course with LSHTM’s wider educational strategy, values, and quality assurance processes.
Work closely and collaboratively with colleagues (including the multi-media department, CELT and course director) to design and prepare high-quality, interactive multimedia learning materials, ensuring they are evidence-based, engaging, and pedagogically sound.
Incorporate inclusive and accessible teaching practices to meet the needs of a diverse global learner community.
Develop mechanisms for monitoring, feedback, and evaluation of the course.

Knowledge Generation
Engage in reflective practice and critical enquiry, including:
Reflecting on own teaching practice and delivery, including aspects of inclusivity, decolonizing, racial literacy and cultural competency.
Contributing to and evaluating innovative approaches to teaching and learning.
Seeking, analysing and acting on student feedback.
Designing, analysing and writing up evaluations.
Disseminate learning through journal articles, conference presentations, special interest groups, social media contributions, etc.
Mentor others with regard to learning and teaching.
Form part of an LSHTM-wide community of staff actively involved in education, taking part in regular events, sharing good practice, and working collaboratively with colleagues.

Internal Contribution
Undertake activities that support the Department, Faculty or LSHTM, such as sharing inclusive practices beyond own team.
Participate in LSHTM Centres relevant to your field of expertise.
Participate in LSHTM’s PDR process.

External Contribution
Demonstrate good external citizenship by contributing to learned society and conference events, journal and grant reviews, etc.

Professional Development and Training
Keep up to date with the latest research and thinking in your academic field and with changes to pedagogic practice within LSHTM and more generally.
Undertake and successfully complete the mandatory training required by LSHTM appropriate to the role.

General

Act as ambassadors for LSHTM when hosting visitors or attending external events.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria
A postgraduate degree at MSc level (or above) in a relevant field, and completion of a travel medicine course or qualification.
Experience in a formal teaching environment in higher education.
Recent experience and proven abilities in teaching or tutoring in travel medicine at postgraduate level.
Up-to-date knowledge of travel medicine and migrant health, including differing global policies, changing epidemiology of infection, global health and environmental health risks.
Clinical experience of working in travel medicine and migrant health, with an understanding of the challenges of risk assessments, varying international guidelines, and access to medication and vaccines.
Experience of developing innovative and up-to-date educational materials, learning opportunities and assessment approaches.
Evidence of excellent digital skills relevant to online education.
Evidence of a critically reflective and evaluative approach to teaching.
An understanding of the strategies for ensuring inclusion and accessibility in learning and teaching and demonstrable evidence of promoting such strategies.
Evidence of effective and enthusiastic support to the delivery of university-level education.
Proven ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively as part of a team, and proven ability to meet deadlines.
Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Evidence of good organisational skills, including effective time management.

Desirable Criteria
Ability to contribute to the research profile of the faculty.
Experience of contributing to funding applications.
Some experience of supervising and supporting junior researchers and/or research degree students, and non-academic staff.
