Job Description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Rock Quarry Specialist required for a dam construction site in Kenya, required to give support/guidance to the Contractor’s staff to improve the quarrying operations.
  • Responsibilities will be to advise the contractor on how to improve current quarrying operations, including the optimisation of drilling and blasting practices to target the production of graded rockfills to specification for a rockfill dam with minimum practical material selection and processing.
  • Improvement of Contractor’s QA/QC systems and protocols.

General Requirements

  • Analysis and design of technical solutions
  • Preparation of technical and progress reports including assessment of resource availability and material balance for project construction
  • Review monthly payment certificates, contract documentation, bills/schedules of quantities and technical specifications and ensure that documentation is correct for monthly or interim payment certificates submitted to the client
  • Preparation of site correspondence as well as other documentation required for site administration and/or reporting
  • Knowledge of contracts
  • Participate in management meetings relating to the project (either on site or in Nairobi)

KEY CHALLENGES

  • Improving quarry productivity to achieve earliest practical dam embankment filling to specification
  • Working with an inexperienced and under -resourced Chinese Contractor
  • Working in a relatively remote location with ad hoc specialist technical support
  • Co-operation with other disciplines/groups within the project team
  • Managing contractor compliance with specifications and project requirements
  • Formulating and modifying solutions or technical challenges on site – discussing and agreeing with senior SMEC staff before implementing.
  • Time and resource management.
  • Co-operation with other disciplines/groups within the construction site as well as head office.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Basic requirements are as follows:
  • Substantive experience of producing graded rockfill on a quarry run basis for rockfill dam works and associated QA/QC arrangements is preferred.
  • Technical qualification is preferred with at least 20 years’ practical relevant experience; Experience of drilling and blasting, ideally with certification
  • Willingness to work with a Chinese contractor in an area of Kenya approx. 2.5 hours drive from Nairobi.
  • CAD skills, preferably REVIT and knowledge of BIM (experience in BIM will be an advantage)
  • Proficient in use of MS Office suite (including MS Project)
  • Valid Driver’s Licence (light motor vehicle)
  • Courteous and business orientated manners when communicating with stakeholders to foster and promote good working relations
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure
  • Ability to make technical decisions which are outcome driven
  • CAD skills, preferably REVIT and knowledge of BIM (experience in BIM will be an advantage)
