Rural Finance Advisor
SNV is a not-for-profit international development organisation with long-term, local presence in over 30 of the poorest countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Our team of advisors works with local partners to equip communities and businesses with the tools, knowledge and connections they need to increase their incomes and gain access to basic services. SNV works across three sectors: Agriculture, Energy and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. Several international donors fund our programmes. SNV has a +100 million euro annual turnover and is aiming for further growth.
Background
In one of its projects, SNV Kenya is looking to fill the position of a Rural Finance Advisor
The Position
The rural finance and banking expert will to play a leading in facilitating livestock farmers and traders business development processes and in particular access to finance. Building capacity of local partners as trainers of trainers in rural finance for follow-up with farmers and traders in livestock.
Key Responsibilities
- Train livestock small holder farmers and traders in on typical steps in applying for banking products, including information required on a loan application and using ICT to access the services.
- Provide financial literacy on managing group finances (including offering credit to members and moving towards group financial sustainability)
- Link farmers/traders with other chain services through financial services for inputs, trade finance and other financing mechanisms in structured markets;
- Deliver financial literacy for smallholder farmers to enable them understand the financial services available and how to make use of them.
- Offer financial trainings covering among others; financial record keeping and bookkeeping; Cash flow, savings and managing finances; Production costing and determining profitability; How to make the right choice of financial services on offer to secure household budget and develop farming activities. How to use financial services including opening & operating a bank account; applying for loans and managing loan repayments etc. Risk management (such as weather, pests and disease) and the financial products available e.g. insurance and micro-insurance.
Requirements
- Master’s Degree or above in Agricultural Economics, Finance, Agribusiness, Corporate Governance, Strategic Planning, Organizational Development or in relevant area
- Experience in Agribusiness and Rural Finance; e.g. micro-finance in rural Kenya
- Strong communications and interpersonal skills with evidence of ability to productively interact with a wide range and levels of organizations (government, private sector, NGOs, research institutions)
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate across projects, to be flexible and creative
- At least 6 years relevant experience working livestock or agricultural development programs in the Horn of Africa, especially in the pastoral areas
- Experience in value chain development and enterprise development
Contract Type: National
Contract Duration: Two years with possibility of extension
