Scientist (Aquaculture)

Job Description

The Scientist will contribute to the sustainable aquaculture research program by conducting high quality research in small-scale and commercial aquaculture systems aimed at improving on-farm performance. The research will include aspects associated with breed, feed and disease management, where suitable, and will require reporting to a range of funders who support the program. S/he will work closely with other members of the sustainable aquaculture team in collaboration with the broader research teams in Africa to deliver integrated solutions to accelerate sustainable growth of aquaculture, primarily in Sub-Saharan Africa. The scientist is also required to undertake research as an effective team member within the CGIAR Research Program on Fish Agrifood Systems (FISH) and new WorldFish sustainable aquaculture research program.

Key Responsibilities:

• Productivity gains in small-scale and commercial aquaculture systems developed and disseminated through the successful design and implementation of high quality research to improve aquaculture performance, with emphasis on aquaculture systems in Sub Saharan Africa.
• Strong inter-disciplinary research collaboration developed and maintained with other WorldFish scientists, particularly on research focusing on fish feeds and nutrition, health and husbandry, genetics and breeding and social science (e.g. feeds/disease; impact studies).
• Productive partnerships with local and international research institutes and private sector, and provision of technical advice to these as required.
• Productive research team focused on research solutions for sustainable growth of aquaculture in Africa.
• High quality experimental plans and journal articles on African aquaculture research produced.
• Key contribution to resources mobilization to support the WorldFish sustainable aquaculture program in Africa.
• Communication products produced for end users.
• Annual research plans for sustainable aquaculture in Zambia and selected WorldFish focal and scaling countries in Africa.

Requirements

Desired Qualifications and Experiences

• PhD in aquaculture or a related field.
• At least 3 years post-doctoral experience in aquaculture.
• Strong record of publications in sustainable aquaculture or a related field.
• Motivation for high quality science and delivery of applications/impact from research.
• Experience of working in inter-disciplinary teams.
• Knowledge and experience of working within African aquaculture systems and developing countries in Africa.
• Knowledge and experience of working with private sector.
• Excellent proficiency in spoken and written English and working knowledge of French would be an advantage.

This is an Internationally Recruited Staff (IRS) position with annual salary ranging between USD 53,000 - USD 58,000 per annum.

Time frame and location

This position will be based at WorldFish’s Office in Lusaka, Zambia. Interviews are expected to be held in July 2017. The successful candidate should be available to commence latest by August 2017.
