Job Description

The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) is the world’s first and oldest international university network; with over 500 member institutions across the Commonwealth, it is also one with great reach and enormous scope for impact. The ACU believes in the transformational power of higher education and our mission is to promote and support excellence for the benefit of individuals and societies throughout the Commonwealth and beyond.

Drawing on the collective experience and expertise of our membership, the ACU seeks to address issues in international higher education through a range of projects, networks, and events. We administer scholarships, provide academic research and leadership on issues in the sector, and promote inter-university cooperation and the sharing of good practice – helping universities serve their communities, now and into the future.

The ACU is now looking to appoint a new Secretary General to guide the organisation through the next stage of its development. Accountable to the ACU’s Council, the Secretary General will be responsible for the organisation’s strategic direction, effective operation, and long-term sustainability.

The appointed individual will have a track record of successful and innovative leadership in a complex organisation, with the ability to foster a productive and creative work environment, experience of managing people and resources, and a compelling vision for the role of the ACU. With a recognised higher degree, the new Secretary General will also need to possess credibility with the ACU’s membership and external stakeholders, and have the ability to represent the organisation at the most senior levels, acting as its champion and advocate. A strong sympathy for the mission of the ACU and alignment to its values will also be crucial.

Salary to be negotiated, based on relevant qualifications and experience, starting from £125,000 per annum. This post will be based in the ACU’s offices in London, WC1H 9HE.
