Collaborating with the direction of the Director, Knowledge, Data Analytics, and Insights (KDI), the Senior Data Analyst will use advanced analytics techniques to create high performing data models, statistical models and creative analyses to address business objectives and client needs.
The incumbent will apply a diverse skillset to assist with data modelling/staging drawing from platform data sources and working with IT architecture/engineer and departmental teams. They will also generate innovative models/analyses, reports, and visuals, while ensuring all products developed and deployed by the KDI team meet the highest standards of efficiency, accuracy, and ethical use.
The Senior Data Analyst will need to keep up to date on industry best practices for model development, validation, documentation, governance, and deployment and will employ these practices in their day-to-day work. This position requires that the incumbent be comfortable operating in a matrix environment, working collaboratively with the other internal teams, and be willing to personally “roll-up-your-sleeves” to achieve success.
In this role, you will:
- In consultation with business units, develop data model(s) to help them understand the structure of their data, and how it can be used to solve issues or problems they may be having;
- Work directly with units to understand the business requirements for the model(s), translating these into model outputs, using your advanced knowledge of statistical modelling techniques and apply statistical analysis and visualization techniques;
- Develop collaborative relationships enterprise-wide and beyond to understand constraints;
- Conduct exploratory data analysis, dentify/flag any emergent insights and create finished reports and data products; maintain and improve existing documentation on data
- Advise Director, KDI on the prioritization, scope and management of data projects under the Data Strategy and in the identification, evaluation and benefits-quantification of new sources of data;
- Work directly with KDI teams’ vendors and data partners to ensure they are following applicable standards and have the proper documentation completed;
- Educate business/IT stakeholders and train peers on specialist data science topics;
- This role does not have direct reports but will frequently have supervisory responsibilities over specific, data-related tasks such as aggregation and cleansing to be performed by more junior analysts. Demonstrated leadership or coaching skills would be considered an asset.
- Participate in disaster planning, preparation and response, as required;
What we are looking for:
- Completion of a university degree in a related field, such as data science, mathematics, economics, information management, with a minimum of 3 years of advanced analytics work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This position requires a satisfactory Canadian criminal record reference check.
- Knowledge of the product development lifecycle (discovery, production, maintenance, etc.);
- Knowledge of database querying languages, SQL in particular;
- Knowledge of Machine Learning languages, Python preferred;
- Knowledge of notebook tools, such as Jupyter and visualization tools, such as Power BI in particular;
- Knowledge of statistical modeling techniques and machine learning algorithms;
- General knowledge and understanding of database architectures, including SQL, NoSQL, and Data Warehousing (Azure Synapse preferred);
- Knowledge of data governance principles;
- Ability to concentrate on complex problems for long periods of time and adapt to changing circumstances in a fast-paced environment (especially during disasters);
- Ability to interpret business needs as technical requirements;
- Ability to quickly comprehend issues as presented and offer solutions;
- Ability to communicate difficult and complex concepts in a clear and effective manner;
- Project Management skills and knowledge – particularly Agile/Scrum methodologies;
- Fluency in English (written and spoken); French is considered an asset.
