Location:
The Senior Director can be based in San Francisco, California, or Washington, DC. The candidate must be based within a 50 mile radius to The Asia Foundation office in each city.

The Asia Foundation is seeking an established expert and leader to serve as Senior Director of Environment and Climate Action. Reporting to the Vice President of Programs, the successful candidate will leverage deep subject matter knowledge, an established reputation, significant experience applying technical expertise to projects in Asia and the Pacific, and extensive networks to enhance the scale and impact of the Foundation’s programming on environment and climate change issues. The selected individual will specifically be tasked with leading the further development of the Foundation’s portfolio of work on climate change through thought leadership, program design and fundraising, and support for high-impact program implementation. The selected candidate will also be expected to design and launch a hub to accelerate the growth of high-impact programming on climate-related issues.
This position presents a unique leadership opportunity to shape the work of an impact-driven organization that is increasingly focused on adjusting its institutional strategy to recognize the wide-ranging effects that climate change is already having on Asia and the Pacific.
Position Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Director of Environment and Climate Action is responsible for driving thought leadership, visibility, establishing strategic direction, developing programs, and securing funding from public and private sources to support the Foundation’s work in the environment and climate field. This includes programs related to climate change adaptation and resilience, climate mitigation and green growth, and natural resource management and use. This will include both the design and implementation of highly localized initiatives, as well as policy support at the national and regional levels. The Senior Director will also be responsible for conceptualizing and launching a new hub to catalyze the growth of high-impact climate change-related work across the Foundation and enhance the Foundation’s contributions to regional and global discourse on climate change.
The Senior Director is expected to spearhead the development of the Foundation’s overarching climate strategy, drive innovative climate programming to strengthen thought leadership, and cultivate partnerships with established environmental and climate organizations as well as with bilateral, multi-lateral, and private sector donors across Asia and the Pacific, the United States, Europe, and Australia. The Senior Director is responsible for providing strategic leadership and organizational guidance for the development, implementation, and fundraising for innovative, high-impact climate programs tailored to the regional, national, and local needs and contexts conditions of different Asia and the Pacific countries.
He/she ensures that the Foundation remains at the forefront of evolving trends in environmental and climate governance, inclusive climate finance, sustainable natural resource management, climate adaptation and resilience, and just energy transition, among others. The Senior Director represents the Foundation externally with partners across government, civil society, the private sector, and the research and policy communities. He/she is also responsible for raising the profile and visibility of the Foundation’s environmental and climate initiatives through speaking engagements, conferences, publications, and other channels.
The Senior Director supervises a small team based in San Francisco and Asia and the Pacific, in addition to developing and leading a network of staff across all Foundation offices working on related programs. The position can be based in either Asia and the Pacific or the US, however, given the nature of the position and the mandate to expand the programs, the Senior Director will be required to travel regularly to Asia and the Pacific to engage with relevant staff and projects throughout the region.
