You will manage economic work for the UK Network in Brazil, delivering bilateral cooperation and providing analysis and reporting on developments in Brazil’s economy and its implications for UK. A key function of this role is supporting the Network – and the Ambassador personally – to have the best external relationships and the most accurate insights to ensure the UK achieves its objectives. You will line manage an economic policy officer and act as quality assurer for an intern. You will work closely with the Head of Trade & Economic Section (who will be your line manager) and collaborate with market access and commercial leads to help deliver a coherent approach to the Network’s trade and economic agenda.
The UK’s Brazil Network and Trade & Economic Team
The UK’s Brazil Network includes the Embassy in Brasilia and consulates in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte and Recife and covers political, economic, climate, trade and commercial work. Teams across the Network work together to strengthen the UK and Brazil’s strategic relationship by deepening our trade ties, safeguarding our security, and tackling common climate and environmental challenges, as well as promoting our values, protecting human rights and democratic freedoms, and leveraging the UK’s position as a global hub for science and innovation.
The Trade & Economic team works to promote UK prosperity and strengthen the economic links between the UK and Brazil. As the Senior Economic Adviser, you will play a key role in delivery of the UK’s Brazil Network priorities, advising senior leadership on the economic policy environment and leading your team to shape the UK’s relationship with Brazil.
Roles and responsibilities:
This is an excellent senior adviser job in the British Embassy, Brasilia. You will lead a high-performing team and be a key adviser for the Ambassador and other senior colleagues. While some flexibility will be needed, you can expect to:

You will also oversee regular analysis and reporting on Brazil’s economy and its impact on UK interests. Your team will be the point of contact in Brazil for reporting on macroeconomic reforms and economic policy issues.
- Lead economic-related stakeholder engagement for the Network, drawing on your existing strong network across the Brazilian government, Congress and the business community to deliver targeted engagement in support of UK objectives. A key part of your role will be leveraging your networks to make sure that the Embassy and other UK diplomatic offices in Brazil, from the Ambassador down, have the right relationships with the right people. As well as proactively developing and managing your own broad stakeholder network, you will act as an enabler who supports others to develop and maintain their own networks.
- Support preparation for ministerial dialogues – notably the Economic & Financial Dialogue meeting between the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Brazilian Minister of Finance. Reporting to the Head of Section, you will oversee discrete workstreams and lead your team to support delivery of these set-piece engagements.
- Deliver insightful and regular analysis on economic issues to spot emerging opportunities or barriers that have the potential to impact delivery of UK priorities in the short or long term, offering guidance to Brazil Network teams on how they should respond.
- Provide succinct and timely communication of key issues and developments in your portfolio to the Brazil Network and to London.
- Ensure incoming high-level HMG visitors (government ministers and senior officials) have impactful meetings on economic issues as part of their visit agenda.
- Manage the economic policy team, setting strategic direction, helping to maintain high quality work and driving a focus on L&D and wellbeing. Support the Head of Section to build a strong and engaged team and support the effective execution of corporate responsibilities (e.g. business planning and budget management).
- As a member of the Network’s leadership cadre, contribute to the internal leadership and management of the UK Network in Brazil, and take a role in our programme to make the UK in Brazil an excellent place to work.
