Job Description

The Content Producer/Storyteller brings CMMB’s work to life through dynamic and compelling human stories and strong copywriting that move an audience to engage more deeply with our mission. Nimble, strategic and creative, the Storyteller works the storytelling spectrum – from gathering stories in the field to packaging them for a variety of strategic purposes. She/he is steeped in our brand strategy and brings a willingness to experiment with fresh approaches and language. The Content Producer/Storyteller is familiar with digital media, best practices in web editing, and AP and Chicago style guides.

The successful Content Producer/Storyteller will be a strategic and creative writer who can deliver character-driven, emotionally engaging content tailored for different target audiences and organizational goals. She/he will bring fresh eyes to every project and help to shape CMMB’s distinct brand voice; yet will always be grounded in strategy. She/he is an agile writer who can do both long- and short-form pieces for target audiences with varying levels of understanding of CMMB’s work in global health. She/he takes feedback constructively and views writing as a collaborative process. She/he is an experienced interviewer, researcher, editor, and writer who can take rough, and often technical content, and translate it into polished, professional stories. She/he is diplomatic, has strong judgment and team skills, and is a strong collaborator and problem solver who can make decisions quickly on the ground and work effectively with our field teams in the pre-production phases of trip planning. The successful candidate works well independently. The Content Producer/Storyteller supports digital engagement goals across fundraising, volunteerism, and communications, and could be called upon to travel with minimal notice.

Key Responsibilities:

Storytelling & Copywriting

  • Translates a strategy brief into powerful copy and stories that drive a desired action
  • Works to deepen understanding of our target audiences
  • Manages content development process (stories & copy) for integrated digital fundraising and marketing campaigns and partners with other teams to package it for multiple channels
  • Writes both short and long-form pieces for CMMB website, email, and social media for the purposes of elevating our profile, raising funds, and advancing our mission.
  • Translates complex issues into compelling and accessible content. Acts as CMMB “in-house reporter” to identify and develop compelling stories about CMMB’s beneficiaries, programs, staff, and the issues relating to our work

Content Gathering

  • Identifies opportunities to gather content from the field in support of our editorial content strategy. Plans trips in partnership with the Communications, Programs, and Partnerships teams. Effectively manages relationships with the field teams.
  • Paired with a photographer or videographer, travels to the field 2-3 times annually to gather stories that brings our brand to life and accomplishes pre-determined communications goals.
  • Delivers packaged content and stories for pre-determined marketing tactics.

Editing and Archiving

  • Performs general editorial and writing to keep CMMB website current, relevant, and engaging for key target audiences and to support key performance indicators for digital engagement
  • Collaborates with Senior Specialist, Communications to optimize and produce stories and content to enhance CMMB website for the purposes of increasing online subscribers, boosting online engagement, and recruiting new online donors
  • Sets up, organizes, manages, and maintains CMMB story and image “asset bank” via digital asset management software to ensure all content is properly tagged, archived, and that all CMMB staff know where to find key stories and images
  • Provides support to Director, Communications in preparing talking points, key messages, and editorial pieces or presentations for major external industry events and conferences.
  • Helping to create, manage, and update the CMMB content calendar in collaboration with key marketing, fundraising, and communications team

Minor web coding, image editing

  • Optimizing CMMB website and email marketing tools with minor HTML coding
  • Editing images (via Photoshop or other image editing software) to post on social media and CMMB website

Knowledge and Experience:

  • BA/S or equivalent in related field required – English, journalism, or communications.
  • 5+ years of professional writing and editorial experience, preferably for an international nonprofit.
  • Diversified portfolio of writing samples required.
  • Demonstrated track record of writing and producing digital and print content for a range of target audiences.
  • Track record of using purposeful storytelling to drive organizational impact and business results.
  • Superior written and verbal communications skills a must.
  • Experience translating technical source material into accessible compelling human stories for a general audience.
  • Understands storytelling and marketing copywriting trends across varied media types.
  • Experience with blog management. Familiarity with web publishing technologies (WordPress, Drupal).
  • Basic web coding skills (HTML) and proficiency with image editing software (PhotoShop)
  • Strong project management skills and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with global health preferred.
  • Team building skills.
  • The awareness of international nonprofit healthcare challenges, current issues and sources of technical support and partnerships.

CMMB is a leading faith-based NGO focused exclusively on global health care for the world’s poor, by building healthy, sustainable communities through community engagement and partnerships. Now entering its second century, CMMB is committed to integrating and focusing its programming around saving the lives of children and mothers by concentrating on leading causes of mortality in targeted communities.

Building around a new CHAMPS (CHildren And Mother PartnershipS) model, CMMB will work at both the community and clinical levels in these targeted communities to strengthen health services and address the leading causes of maternal and child death. CMMB has committed to develop 16 CHAMPS sites by 2020, incorporating at least 3 in Haiti, Kenya, Peru, South Sudan, and Zambia.
