Role definition
The Senior Stories and Content Advisor, leads on the sourcing and gathering of compelling, authentic, and ethical multimedia stories, from our programmatic work, globally.
The post holder will lead on the story gathering process, from research and planning, to delivery and post production. They will commission freelancers globally, and at times gather stories directly, working closely with teams across the organisation. The post holder will also support and guide internal colleagues, to gather powerful and respectful stories, where quality, ethics and UK audience understanding are central.
The Senior Stories and Content Advisor, will primarily support story needs for key fundraising appeals, and humanitarian emergencies, across a range of channels. However, the post holder may also support wider teams, for example media, policy and campaigns, to build upon a bank of stories the organisation can draw from, particularly around our priority area of Climate Justice.
Key outcomes
- Content trips to our programmes are ethical, well-planned, timely and within budget, to deliver the story needs for our fundraising activities including, but not limited to, philanthropy, individual giving, diocesan and denominational appeals, legacy marketing, and campaigning.
- Powerful stories to tell that will attract supporters to give, act and pray.
- Key humanitarian appeals are supported with stories for effective digital, fundraising and media engagement
- Content is gathered to ethical, and quality best practice, working closely with the Communications and Content Manager, and Senior Multimedia Advisor
Role context
The Stories and Content Adviser is part of the content and programme communications team which sits in the Marketing and Legacies department within Fundraising and Supporter Engagement.

Applied skills/knowledge and expertise
Essential
- Qualifications in communications, marketing, journalism, or international development (or equivalent experience)
- Excellent planning, organisational and influencing skills
- An ability to critique, and challenge storytelling best practice, keeping abreast of latest developments
- Experience leading content gathering trips
- Experience supporting content requirements for a range of stakeholders
- Background in one or more areas of multimedia content gathering (interviewing, audio, photography, video)
- Able to provide technical support to others on effective storytelling, including visual storytelling techniques
- Willingness for self-development around storytelling and multimedia
- Previous experience in commissioning freelancers
Desirable
- Previous experience of working in global development, preferably overseas, and an excellent understanding of the development sector, its issues, and challenges
- Experience working in sensitive and unpredictable environments
- Previous experience supporting content needs for key fundraising appeals and/or humanitarian appeals
- Demonstrates a commitment to ethical and anti-racist storytelling
- Semi-professional level photography obtained through training/on the job experience
- Experience using Digital Asset Management Systems for storing multimedia content
- Direct content gathering experience
- Video producing/editing skills
- Knowledge of photoshop / editing suites
