OPEN CALL:

Radio specialists are required from a range of disciplines to assist the national expansion of Eye Radio, South Sudan, a station that combines commercial approach with a nonprofit public service broadcasting mission.

Eye Radio broadcasts a mix of English (primary), Simple Arabic and local languages. Internews is seeking to build a roster of experienced radio broadcast professionals to work as specialist advisors/trainers in Juba, South Sudan for short and medium term opportunities (2 weeks to 6 months).

This is a great opportunity to apply your radio experience in a totally different environment, working with a keen-to-learn team, building a national radio station in the world’s newest country.

Timing: Rolling starting in Winter/Spring 2016 through Sep 2018

Specialist advisor/trainer areas include:

  • Commercial radio sales (advertising, S&P, marketing & events)
  • Program co-production (features, PSAs) esp for NGO clients
  • Radio journalism
  • Arabic radio journalism and presentation
  • Audio production (commercials, promos, station sound)
  • Radio website & social media
  • Broadcast engineering
  • Studio operations

These roles are based in Juba, South Sudan. Due to the current security context in South Sudan, international staff are housed in a residential compound with other international organizations (individual units, room and board provided). Transportation is also provided to/from work. Medical clearance is required and a security briefing will be provided prior to arrival in country.

PROJECT BACKGROUND:

Eye Radio (eyeradio.org) is a Juba-based FM station operated by Eye Media, a 100% South Sudanese managed NGO with a social enterprise business model approach. With national expansion plans underway via the installation of repeater transmitters in state capitals, Eye Radio broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in English and Simple Arabic providing detailed, objective news and information, programs related to education, health, agriculture and other important issues, music, sports and entertainment.

An international team of advisors works side-by-side with Eye Media national staff, providing hands-on mentoring, training and advisory support to build its editorial, programming, management and administration, sales and marketing capacities, and organizational and financial sustainability.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Min 5 years of relevant media or radio broadcasting expertise and/or degree depending on the specialty required. Experience in public service (e.g. BBC, NPR) and/or commercial sectors a plus.
  • Training or mentoring experience.
  • Understanding/experience of the South Sudanese or other similar operating environments in Africa or other developing country context a plus.
  • Sensitivity to cross-cultural dynamics in the workplace. Well-developed inter-personal skills. Self-reliance, resourcefulness, problem-solving skills, good humor and flexibility. Resilience and self-motivation to work in the challenging environment of South Sudan.
