Job Description
Effective with the release of this announcement, Winrock International seeks applicants for a volunteer position in South Sudan, focusing on the development of materials and local capacity to support girls’ education. The responsibilities, duties, and qualifications for these positions are described in the attached position descriptions.

GENERAL:
Winrock International is a non-profit organization whose mission is to put ideas to work –increasing education and skills, enhancing economic development, and promoting rural employment while protecting the environment. Program emphases include education, women’s leadership and gender equity, agricultural productivity, forestry and natural resource management, rural enterprise and employment, and renewable energy. Over 180 projects are underway in nearly 50 developing countries and the United States.
TERMS:
This is a volunteer position, with no fee, stipend, or benefits. However Winrock will pay all expenses related to the assignment, including international airfare, visas, in-country transportation, lodging and board, communications costs, and purchase of materials and supplies associated with the assignment. Winrock provides emergency evacuation coverage for all staff, volunteers, and consultants traveling internationally.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Volunteer, HIV/AIDS Awareness and Prevention Materials for Youth
Location: Juba, Sudan (with possible travel to other areas of Southern Sudan)
Department: Empowerment and Civic Engagement Group (ECE)
Reports To: Chief of Party
Target Dates: 4 week period; September-November 2008 (2 weeks in Sudan)
Exact timeframe and dates flexible depending on selected volunteer
POSITION SUMMARY:
Winrock’s Gender Equity through Education program addresses education and training gaps in Sudan by providing immediate educational assistance to girls, women, and communities while achieving long-term impacts by helping the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology (MoEST) ensure its policies are equitable and further operationalize its plans. The project is working primarily in Southern Sudan and the Three Areas.
The goal of this assignment is to advance the project’s work in developing and distributing classroom-based HIV/AIDS materials (in secondary schools) with gender-specific messages and information. Working with counterparts at the MoEST, the volunteer will first conduct a thorough analysis of the expanse of materials and programs addressing the topic of HIV/AIDS in southern Sudan, and what gaps remain for the audience of students and teachers. After adapting or developing materials, s/he will prepare an orientation program for teachers and gender-equity teams who will be using the materials with students, and will prepare the MoEST to deliver the orientation.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Review project documents and Winrock tools; review and/or suggest industry models to adapt.
2. Work with WI team and the MoEST to adapt or develop HIV/AIDS materials
3. Develop program to orient teachers and school-based gender equity teams to the materials
4. Orient MoEST and state-level staff gender equity team trainers to the materials
5. Prepare Assignment Report including recommendations for further action
QUALIFICATIONS AND BACKGROUND:
Education:
Bachelor's degree in field related to education, health, community development, gender equity, youth empowerment, and/or communications and social marketing; international development focus preferred. Master’s degree preferred.
Experience:
At least four years’ experience in international development focusing on health, youth and education, and/or gender equity WITH at least two years’ experience in social marketing, communications, materials design, training, or related skills in an international development context. Some combination of health, youth, gender and materials development and training strongly preferred. Field work in developing countries preferred, especially in Africa.
Skills:
- Mature, flexible, and willing to work – and find solutions – in a challenging environment
- Demonstrated cross-cultural sensitivity and ability to work well with local counterparts
- Excellent communication skills (written and oral)
- Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks
- Team player with good interpersonal skills
- English fluency required; Arabic skills desirable but not necessary
