The Commonwealth Secretariat’s Sport for Development and Peace (SDP) work directly contributes to the organisation’s objective to ensure people of the Commonwealth fulfil their potential with dignity and equality in a healthy environment. The work has a strong focus on engaging and empowering young people to meaningfully participate in political and development processes through sport. Young people constitute more than 60% of the population of the Commonwealth, and the wellbeing and development of this 1.2 billion youth cohort are essential to the success of the Commonwealth and its 56 member states.
The SDP Officer plays an important role supporting delivery of the strategic objectives of the Commonwealth Secretariat to protect and promote the contribution of sport to sustainable social, economic and environmental development. The role will undertake multi-sectoral research, liaise with the Adviser SDP to provide guidance, and coordinate the provision of technical assistance to member governments to support national policy development and institutional capacity building as well as the delivery of Commonwealth meetings, platforms and working groups.
Duties of the role include coordinating identified Commonwealth Secretariat sport-related projects, supporting and advising on the development of national policy and strategies, providing support in building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, assisting in the provision of the Secretariat for the Commonwealth Advisory Board on Sport (CABOS), and representing the Commonwealth Secretariat in external partner briefings, clinics, conferences, networking and other training and development workshops when required. To be considered for this opportunity, you will need a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline, such as sport, sport for development and peace (SDP), international relations, public policy, public administration, or International Development studies with overlaps of Youth Development. You will need sound and demonstrated knowledge of, and professional experience of sport and development policy, including over 5 years experience in managing sport and/or development policy formulation and implementation.
You will also need to have over 5 years experience in working in /with Government, intergovernmental or international NGO organisations; stakeholder engagement; and managing projects involving multiple partners including governmental agencies or inter-governmental bodies.
