Job Description

PYXERA Global seeks a highly motivated candidate to work 20-40 hours per week as a Program Intern at our office in Washington, DC. The Program Intern will work with PYXERA Global’s Enterprise and Community Development (ECD) Division, which collaborates with diverse partners to build resilient businesses and entrepreneurial ecosystems through community driven solutions.

The Program Intern will engage in and support a research initiative to articulate the value of strategic social investment by the private sector. The ideal candidate will have international development experience, thrives in a fast-paced office environment, and has the academic preparation and/or skills in quantitative analysis and social impact measurement. The candidate must be detail-oriented, able to both collaboratively and independently lead research activities, and have strong quantitative reasoning and data management (Excel) skills. Exposure to and/or working-knowledge of public (government) education systems in low-access environments and/or agriculture/agrarian practices in remote communities is preferred.

The internship is paid. Candidates who are be able to continue through Spring 2020 is desired.

KEY POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

The Program Intern will be responsible for supporting the research initiative, above, with oversight from the Program Manager and Program Coordinator. Key responsibilities and level of effort include:

Research and Quantitative Analysis – 60%

  • Conduct desk-based research, including literature review and secondary data mining, to support concept design and delivery
  • Conduct advanced data analysis in Excel, monitor and help enhance database management efforts, compile and verify historical program data
  • Create visuals with Excel and other data visualization platforms

Reporting and Communications – 15%

  • Conduct relevant contextual research, as related to the research initiative
  • Edit program reports, as needed
  • Liaise with implementation and DC office teams to develop case studies

Business Development – 15%

  • Assist with proposal review and delivery, as related to the research initiative
  • Support overall business development processes

Finance – 5%

  • Provide support to the team in preparing and reviewing financial documents, as pertaining to the research initiative

Miscellaneous – 5%

  • Develop and maintain document management systems
  • Perform other tasks, as necessary

KNOWLEDGE & SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Pursuing or holds a Master’s degree in international development, business, or economics with a focus or strong/demonstrable skills in economics, econometrics, impact measurement, finance or investment analysis
  • Six months to two years of professional experience in international development, such as in agriculture or agribusiness, education, small-medium enterprise development
  • Demonstrable skills in Microsoft Excel, especially in data cleaning, management and analysis experience
  • Academic background and/or practical experience in any of the following: social impact measurement, quantitative financial analysis, calculating ROI, measuring ESGs (environment, social, and governance) indicators, evaluating social returns on investments, or cost-benefit analysis
  • Demonstrated experience conducting desk research, including literature review, secondary data mining and qualitative data analysis
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required
  • Strong writing skills in English
  • Demonstrates initiative and ability to work independently and as a member of a team, especially cross-cultural, to meet program needs
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal communication skills

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS DESIRED

  • Experience working with both private and/or non-profit actors in the areas of corporate social responsibility and sustainability strategies
  • Experience with ArcGIS, InDesign, PowerBI, CommCare, DHIS-2, and other data collection and/or visualization platforms preferred
  • Ability to manage diverse activities, meet competing deadlines, and exercise flexibility in changing situations or priorities
  • Knowledge in a foreign language, preferably Hindi, Hausa, French, or Spanish a plus
