Purpose
Miller Center is the foremost university-based social enterprise accelerator, and has supported more than 1,300 social entrepreneurs over the past several years, primarily in the Global South. The Center’s mission is to accelerate entrepreneurship to end global poverty and protect the planet. Miller Center delivers world-class accelerator programs that connect global social enterprise leaders with business executives and university students to develop more sustainable, scalable, market-based solutions to the problems of those living in poverty around the world. Founded in 1997, Miller Center is one of three Centers of Distinction at Santa Clara University, located in the heart of Silicon Valley. Here we leverage this entrepreneurial spirit with the University’s Jesuit heritage of service to the poor, global citizenship, and the institution’s commitment around diversity, inclusion, and social justice.
Miller Center’s ambitious 2025 strategy aims to double the organization’s historic depth of impact by cumulatively supporting social enterprise alumni to improve 150 million lives within three years of graduating from a Center program (from a baseline of 75 million lives). In addition, the Center intends to support partner social enterprises to collectively raise $500 million between 2021 and 2025; and reach at least 500 Santa Clara students per year by 2025. These three topline key performance indicators drive all of Miller Center’s work, providing a North Star for all programs and support functions.
The Senior Director of Programs leads Miller Center’s core operations - the social enterprise accelerators, social enterprise alumni solutions, investment readiness training programs, and impact investing initiatives. They direct and manage programmatic delivery and support functions including recruitment and selection of social entrepreneurs, curriculum development and improvement, mentorship, events, and quality control. The Senior Director drives the development of systems and processes that increase efficacy and quality of programs and the impact on social enterprise participants including; target market clarity and outreach, selection criteria, partnerships, programmatic and process-related prototypes and innovations, and positioning within the market. As a member of the Center Leadership Team (CLT) reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Senior Director supports organizational health, organizational alignment, strategic planning, business development, and key stakeholder engagement (including via advisory board meetings, university events, staff meetings, leadership forums, etc).
Responsibilities
Program Development and Operations (50%)
• Directs all resources associated with the successful design and delivery of Miller Center accelerator programs, including alumni programs
• Oversees and directs management of over 300 executives who serve as volunteer mentors for Miller Center programs
• Drives Miller Center processes that enable the team to support social entrepreneurs in increasing their funding and impact goals
• Leads Miller Center staff, mentors, SCU faculty, and other content experts to ensure quality curriculum for Miller Center programs
• Drives systematization and documentation of key processes and information across Miller Center’s programs
• Creates roadmaps and drives program innovations that link Miller Center operations to its strategy.
• Directs post-training support of social entrepreneur alumni including engagement, needs assessment, Key Performance Indicator monitoring, and investment raised.
• Monitors Net Promoter Score and referencability of Miller Center programs
• Ensures that the principles of diversity (race, gender, sexual orientation, e.g.), inclusion and social justice are woven throughout the Miller Center programs, processes, and services

People Management Tasks (30%)
This position supervises all of the Miller Center programmatic staff, including directly supervising the Mentor Network Director, the Alumni Programs Director, and Director of Impact Investing. In addition to assuring the smooth delivery of programs, this person is responsible for the wellbeing of their team including:
• Manage the onboarding process for new employees to enable them to maximize their productivity and develop a sense of belonging to the team Celebrate the accomplishments of team members both personally and professionally (including birthdays, family milestones, relevant cultural and religious events, etc.)
• Mentor (in-the-moment and through regular check-ins) for success on new assignments and, as needed, for performance improvement
• Conduct regular one-on-one conversations (at a minimum quarterly) with direct reports to discuss how they are feeling and to provide actionable feedback (both your own and what you solicit from coworkers) on current work and behaviors
• Learn, identify and understand needs around development opportunities for direct reports such as proposals, classes, conferences, short-term assignments, and stretch assignments.
• Follow-up with direct reports upon completion of these activities to provide feedback and spark learning and insights Listen to, understand desires on career development (i.e. the path to promotion) both inside, outside of Miller Center, manage, and communicate policies around promotion opportunities.
• Proactively manage performance of direct reports not meeting expectations and collaborate with Human Resources to take appropriate actions
• Leverage existing organization health tool including Miller Center’s Talent Management Journey and MOSAIC Moments to promote organizational health as well as be a culture ambassador for the center.
• Encourage employees to seek ongoing professional development around topics of diversity, inclusion, and social justice and how this effects the work of Miller Center.
Key Relationship Management (20%)
• Ensures coordinated strategies to provide post-program services to alumni social enterprises
• Oversees engagement of SCU and external resources to support acceleration of social enterprises (e.g., Frugal Innovation Hub, Entrepreneur’s Law Clinic; pro bono legal support)
• Develops criteria and ensures pipeline of investment-ready social enterprises for the impact investing ecosystem
• Works with the Efficiency and Learning team to design and implement monitoring and evaluation strategies for Miller Center programs to support continuous improvement, tacit knowledge capture and sharing, and in achieving efficiencies
• Participates in business development and fundraising discussions and allocates resources to inform proposals and effective stewardship
• Builds high-level relationships with potential funders of Miller Center; partner institutions; network partners; and Advisory Board members, including SCU Trustees.
• Serve on Miller Center’s Center Leadership Team (CLT).
• As part of the of the CLT, helps to ensure that the Miller Center is helping advance diversity, inclusion, and social justice
Minimal Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent combination of education and experience; advanced degree preferred
• Experience in a senior operating position within in the social enterprise or related sector
• Experience managing multiple stakeholder groups within an organization, including people management experience
Qualifications Assumed from Requisite Prior Experience:
• Can conceptualize and implement strategies to achieve short-term and long-term goals
• Talent for building synergistic relationships with internal and external partners that share the Center’s mission
• Proven capabilities to direct and supervise staff, students, contractors, and volunteers
• Ability to work and engage with diverse communities and constituents
• Works effectively with all levels of internal constituents, particularly faculty, staff, and students; ability to leverage volunteers and mentors
• Demonstrated ability to develop concept notes, funding proposals, and project plans
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Good judgment and discretion to maintain confidentiality when necessary
• Understand and support the values and ideals of Jesuit education
• Valid driver’s license, passport, and ability to travel to developing countries
Desired Qualifications:
• At least 10 years in program operations and delivery
• Experience working with social enterprises and impact investors
• Proven ability to work with executives, including CEOs, CFOs, and CTOs
