Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision and guidance of the Special Assistant of the Assistant-Secretary-General, Executive Director of CTED, the intern may be responsible for the following duties:

  • Proactively contributing suggestions and ideas that will add value to CTED Office of the Executive Director
  • Assisting in preparing background notes and talking points for meetings, missions, and other events attended by the Executive Director
  • Attending and taking notes at meetings, conferences, and other events; assisting in the preparation of summaries and reports of discussions
  • Analyzing issues of concern raised by relevant stakeholders in the area of counter-terrorism
  • Assisting in gathering, selecting, and analyzing data from communications and publications, including UN meetings, reports of international and regional organizations, and press sources
  • Reviewing, translating, and editing documents as required
  • Preparing notes and summaries of events where the Executive Director participates
  • Conducting research on topics relevant to CTED’s mandate and preparing research documents
  • Assisting in compiling CTED’s monthly newsletter
  • Assisting the Special Assistant in her activities to support the Executive Director
  • Assisting in preparing documents for organizing CTC/CTED meetings, workshops, and seminars
  • Taking on other special projects as assigned

Qualifications/Special Skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution, or related area
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent)
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for this internship.

Intern-Specific Text
Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
