Job Description: Strategic Development Director
Global Health Media Project (GHMP) is seeking a Strategic Development Director to take our start-up non-profit to the next level. This is a pivotal position and we hope to find an inspired candidate to join us.
Responsibilities
We seek a sharp, dynamic, and experienced individual to join our team. The Strategic Development Director will be responsible for implementing the strategic vision of our organization through his/her role in development and communications. The successful candidate will be well networked in the global health space, a gifted fundraiser, an effective presenter, and devoted to our mission.
S/he will work closely with the Executive Director and the Associate Director in the following three areas:
Strategy
- Lead design and execution of organizational strategy to grow and become financially sustainable
Fundraising
- Develop and implement a systematic fundraising approach designed to provide a consistent and expanding revenue stream
- Build diversified revenue stream for organization, including earned income
- Research private foundation prospects and develop strategies for seeking new support or renewing private support
- Identify, cultivate and secure major gifts; develop and maintain ongoing relationships with major donors
- Liaise with foundations and funding organizations; engage with program officers; effectively and persuasively present GHMP’s case for support; help generate LOIs, proposals, and supporting documents in response to solicitations.
- Create and execute a strategy for a large sustained base of annual individual donors; manage twice yearly giving campaign
- Attend relevant events or conferences to cultivate donors and prospects
Communications
- Help refine the vision and communications strategy of the organization as it evolves
- Lead communications with financial backers, strategic partners, distribution partners, the media, and influencers in the global public health arena
- Serve as a credible and compelling spokesperson for the organization
Qualifications
Ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
Organizational
- 5+ years of relevant work experience, ideally in development and communications with a record of achievement in a mission-driven organization
- Entrepreneurial drive, strategic thinker, and organizational skills
- Thorough understanding of non-profit and business environment
- Well balanced professionally and able to see the big picture with attention to detail.
- Critical thinker, with the ability to lead a team toward innovation and creativity.
Fundraising
- Assertive fundraiser who is comfortable picking up the phone or meeting face-to-face, pitching our organization with passion and credibility.
- Interest and aptitude in prospecting, cultivating, and managing new donors
- Experience developing and managing grants and budgets
- Proven ability to approach donors and senior level foundation staff, make effective presentations to foundation executives; extensive global health professional network a plus
- Successful track record identifying, cultivating, and soliciting individual donors, corporations, foundations, and other sources
Skills
- Demonstrated ability to write and present clearly and persuasively
- Excellent public speaker: able to communicate passion about the organization, and move people emotionally
- Ability to communicate complex ideas in a compelling way to a variety of audiences
- Proficiency with helpful software (such as The Raiser’s Edge) and desktop publishing/graphics applications is a plus
Personality
- High degree of initiative and energy, “can-do” attitude, flexibility, teamwork, and attention to detail
- Independent, self motivated, able to work effectively and efficiently out of home office
- Excellent interpersonal skills including strong work ethic, impeccable integrity, and judgment
- Desire to work in a growth-oriented, start-up environment
- Genuine understanding and support for GHMP’s mission to improve health care and health outcomes in resource-poor areas with video
Background
- Strong background in public health, international development, and social entrepreneurship preferred
- Extensive network in the global health arena
- Bachelor’s degree required, relevant advanced degree preferred
About the Organization
Global Health Media Project creates innovative teaching films to save lives in developing countries. In three years, we have created 60 unique videos in five + languages that over 3,500 organizations use including UNICEF, WHO, MSF, Save the Children, Ministries of Health, teaching institutions, and NGOs both large and small. Our work is highly regarded, serving a critical unmet need for better teaching tools for health workers and families worldwide.
Salary/job details: Hours will initially start at 20-30 hours per week with potential to grow to full time. The position will evolve over time, and the candidate must have the ability to expand their role as the organization grows. The candidate can work remotely. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
