Duties
Summary

This position serves as the Chief, Education and Community Involvement Branch (ECIB), and is responsible for evaluating public education programs and activities to inform the public of the latest advances in science, to support the dissemination of information to teachers, students, and consumers; developing, implementing, and evaluating community involvement programs and activities throughout the country, and other duties.

Responsibilities
  • Develops and implements strategies, priorities, and timelines for short and long-term goals and related to public education and community engagement.
  • Provides leadership on program and policy issues relating to basic and biological science and guidance to students and teachers to learn about educational research.
  • Conceives, creates, and disseminates instructional educational materials, fact sheets, web-based resources, feature articles, brochures and other materials to support the mission.
  • Consults on incorporating research findings into education and outreach programs, such as computer assisted education resources and community-based education programs.
  • Serves as a representative to other federal agencies, national organizations, and other external stakeholders.
  • Fosters and coordinates interaction and acts as a liaison with diverse outside organizations, professional associations, community advocacy groups, industry and academia.
  • Supervises and directs professional and clerical staff and directs and oversees the implementation of fellowship, summer, or other intern programs for branch.
  • Assigns and reviews work products; sets priorities and goals; identifies developmental and training needs; approves leave, develops performance standards and evaluates work performance for staff.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications: You must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a Bachelor’s degree or graduate/higher level degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences, or allied sciences appropriate to the work of this position. (This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained).

Additional Qualifications: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: develop and implement public education and community involvement to inform general public of latest advancements in biomedical or biological sciences; provide leadership on policy issues relating to science education; direct long range planning and evaluation of education programs and policy; provide supervision and direction to professional and clerical staff.
