Depending on the situation of the successful candidate, the internship may also offer a Flexible Work Arrangement (remote, hybrid, and/or part-time).

Duties and Responsibilities
The Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) / Division for Sustainable Development Goals (DSDG) seeks to provide leadership and catalyze action in promoting and coordinating the implementation of internationally agreed development goals, including the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The intern will:

  • Contribute to in-person and virtual activities, including conferences, intergovernmental meetings, capacity-building events, webinars, consultations, and online trainings.
  • Engage in collaborative research and analysis and assist in drafting and reviewing documents.
  • Participate in hands-on work within the team, gaining exposure to real-time dynamics, negotiations, and UN projects.
  • Gain experience organizing UN conferences and intergovernmental events and strengthen organizational and political skills.

Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Drafting concept notes for events that mobilize stakeholders toward SDG engagement.
  • Contributing to stakeholder engagement strategies and plans, including compiling inputs, drafting reports, and outreach materials.
  • Assisting with the organization of in-person and virtual events, including agendas, background documents, technical event support, and post-event reports.
  • Monitoring live discussions, preparing social media content, reviewing participant lists, and managing online postings.
  • Reviewing SDG partnerships and analyzing implementation follow-ups.
  • Supporting research and preparation of reports for events such as the UN 2026 Water Conference, the High-Level Political Forum, ECOSOC Partnership Forum, and others.
  • Supporting high-level events and side-event selection and coordination.
  • Attending intergovernmental meetings, expert events, and webinars and preparing summaries.
  • Providing general virtual office support (e.g., correspondence, online recordkeeping, SharePoint, minute-taking).
  • Assisting with communication and outreach, including social media.
  • Participating in person or virtually in UN Headquarters events.
  • Assisting staff with website content updates.
  • Performing other ad hoc tasks related to the SDGs.

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Applicants must meet one of the following:
    • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or higher).
    • Be in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level).
  • Computer literacy in standard software applications is required.
  • No professional experience is required.
  • Knowledge of sustainable development issues is an asset.
  • The intern is expected to:
    • Demonstrate a keen interest in the UN’s work and a personal commitment to the Charter.
    • Show the ability to work effectively across cultures and be open to diverse perspectives.

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of any additional official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is an asset.
