Job Description

Cowater is currently recruiting for a Technical Expert for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TETVET), Mining and Education for an upcoming DFATD funded project. The successful candidate will be based at home and in the field (Ethiopia) for a term of 900 days over 5 years. The Technical Expert for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TETVET) will be responsible for the delivery of the TVET component of the project. The TETVET will be a subject matter specialist in the area of mining vocational education and skills training. The project is designed to support Ethiopia’s development goals (for the mining sector to become a catalyst for sustainable economic growth), through increasing domestic employment in the mining industry. To do so, the project will strengthen Ethiopian universities and technical vocational education and training (TVET) schools, as well as support women and local communities located in mining regions, in collaboration with mining companies.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Oversee and participate in delivery activities related to mining TVET education;
  • Support the development of mining related vocational and employment skills training programs;
  • Plan and carry out assessments of occupational standards of vocational training institutes in key mining related areas;
  • Develop and implement innovative training programs to improve employability of local communities, particularly women in the mining industry;
  • Develop and implement awareness raising campaigns aimed at communities near mine sites of job opportunities in mining related fields; and
  • Advise on socio-cultural issues and/or gender equality issues around mine sites.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree (or higher) in education, mining, or relevant field
  • Experience supporting vocational technical training institutes in developing mining employment skills programs
  • Experience Assessing vocational training institutes in key mining areas
  • Experience developing and implementing training to improve mining related employability
  • Experience developing and implementing awareness raising campaigns, related to mining employment opportunities
  • Experience identifying and addressing mining related socio-cultural/gender equality issues, preferably in Ethiopia or another developing country
