The European Investment Fund (EIF) is seeking to recruit for its Impact Assessment Division, at its headquarters in Luxembourg, a Trainee - Economic Research.

Duration: 5 months

Starting date: October 2025

Specific Post Environment: The Impact Assessment (IA) Division supports the EIF’s business development and strategic orientation, promoting the EIF’s transition towards an impact-driven institution. The team’s goal is to develop frameworks, processes and tools to assess the achievement of policy priorities, including the assessment of the ex-ante and ex-post financial and non-financial impacts of EIF operations.

Overall objective:

Your overall objectives will be to:

  • Support in the development and creation of necessary tools for the ex-ante Impact Assessment methodology and the delivery of ex-post impact studies
  • Support in creating the documentation, manuals, user guides and training material necessary to successfully deploy the EIF Impact Assessment framework

Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the other members in the team, you shall:

  • Support the development, pilot, and calibration of the ex-ante Impact Assessment methodology
  • Support the drafting of user guide and operating manuals for the ex-ante IA grading process
  • Support the implementation of related data collection, preparation and analyses
  • Support the setting-up of procedures to manage support requests for users of the ex-ante EIF IA frame
  • Support the creation of a harmonised list of ex-post KPIs according to the EIF products’ theory(ies) of change

Expected outcome:

  • Support in the definition, development, pilot phase and documentation of the ex-ante EIF IA methodology
  • Support in tasks ancillary to the Impact Assessment framework, e.g. the ex-post Impact Assessment micro-data projects
  • Support the team’s projects aiming at classifying and estimating the non-financial impacts of EIF’s activities

Qualifications

  • University degree (or on-going studies at advanced stage) in economics, finance, computer science or a business-related field; preferably at least Bachelor level
  • Advanced analytical and quantitative skills. Knowledge of relational databases like MySQL, SQL server would be considered and asset
  • Good programming skills. Experience with Business Intelligence tools (e.g., Tableau, PowerBI) would be a plus
  • Thorough knowledge of standard Microsoft IT applications in use within the team, in particular Excel and PowerPoint
  • Familiarity with different public data sources in use within the team (e.g. ECB, OECD, Eurostat) would be a plus
  • Some knowledge and understanding of EIF’s mission, activities and products and of markets and legal frameworks relevant to EIF business, as well as policies and priorities in that context

Competencies

  • Good analytical, drafting and synthesis skills
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English; knowledge of further EU languages considered an asset
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team
  • Ability to work productively and under tight deadlines
  • Demonstrate initiative, capability to work autonomously under given objectives and time constraints; organise own work effectively
