Safeguarding level: This post will have regular, direct and unsupervised access to childrenandvulnerable adults either face to face or online or the post will have supervisory responsibility for people who have direct unsupervised access to children or post will have accountability at organisational level to ensuresafeguarding policy is in place and implemented at all levels. A criminal background check (Enhance DBS check for UK or equivalent highest level of Police check) will be obtained for post holder at this level prior to their start date.

Role purpose: Support ACTIVE project in Nigeria the Youth Engagement Adviser (volunteer role) will play a key role in providing a first point of contact for VSO volunteer Alumni and Champions and creating opportunities for themto have their voices heard as ACTIVE citizens in their various communities.

Project Background and Contextual Information

This is a great opportunity for someone who’s passionate about changing the outcomes for youngpeople and ensuring they are at the centre of VSO work. Youth Engagement Adviser (volunteer role) will work across VSO project, helping to develop and deliver a range of opportunities and activities to build and engage networks of young people across the VSO Youth Movement.

Youth Engagement Adviser (volunteer role) will develop positive relationships with youth organisations and young people across the VSO Youth Movement, so that our work is driven by thevoices of youth and young people and you will create innovative ways for young people to engageincollective action. Involving young people in the design and delivery of VSO Youth’s activities andempowering them to become active citizens and create positive change is embedded throughout our work. He /She will be responsible for delivering a range of projects and workstreams to enableyoung people from youth organisations across Nigeria.

Youth Engagement Adviser (volunteer role) will play a key role in providing a first point of contact forVSO volunteer Alumni and Champions and creating opportunities for them to have their voices heard.

Role Outputs

  • Create and deliver an inclusive engagement programme that builds awareness and understanding about ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP with young people and enables their active involvement in it.
  • Develop and implement youth-oriented programs and initiatives that address the needs andinterests of young people.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to design programs that promote positive youth development, leadership, and empowerment.
  • Create strategies to engage and involve youth in meaningful activities and decision-making processes.
  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and support to young individuals, helping themset andachieve personal and educational goals.
  • Facilitate peer mentorship programs and workshops.
  • Serve as an advocate for youth, ensuring their voices are heard and their concerns areaddressed within the organization or community.
  • Encourage young people to participate in advocacy efforts on issues that affect them
  • Organize and lead workshops, training sessions, and educational programs on topics relevant to youth, such as life skills, career development, and civic engagement.
  • Foster partnerships and collaborations with community organizations, schools, and local government agencies to create opportunities for youth involvement.
  • Organize and promote community events and initiatives that engage young people.
  • Track and evaluate the impact of youth engagement programs and initiatives.
  • Collect and analyze data to measure the effectiveness of youth-focused efforts.
  • Manage budgets allocated to youth programs and ensure funds are used effectively and transparently.

Experience and Skills required for this volunteer placement

  • Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, International Relations, Community development, Political Science or other relevant areas.
  • 3 years of practical experience in a field related to community mobilization, civic engagement or related area.
  • Must be interested and committed to Human Rights, Gender Equality and Gender issues.
  • Proficiency in Word and Excel required.
  • Ability to manage conflict work effectively in unstable, challenging, and fast-paced environments.
  • Ability to keenly observe confidentiality and discretion.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Leadership and People Management skill
  • Ability to set priorities, meet specific objectives, use political judgment and knowledge;
  • Good interpersonal skills, diligence, open mindedness, and dedication.
  • Experience in writing reports is desirable.

Additional Information

This is a national volunteer position open to nationals of Nigeria only as we are unable to provide sponsorship for this position.

All volunteers have an allowance paid in local currency. The allowance meets reasonable living expenses in country, but will not be enough to send money home.

VSO works with some of the poorest communities in the world which means accommodation varies and will be basic.
