Advocates and Big Pharma both unhappy with latest pandemic treaty draft

The pharmaceutical industry is lamenting the inclusion of intellectual property waivers in the text while access advocates say the language around equity and IP remains vague and weak on enforcement.

By Jenny Lei Ravelo // 19 October 2023

Advocates are encouraged that the new draft continues to include text on intellectual property waivers — despite fierce opposition from the pharmaceutical industry — and other text to achieve equity but said the language remains vague and weak on enforcement.

Mohga Kamal-Yanni, policy co-lead of the People’s Vaccine Alliance, said the current wording overall “contains too few obligations to ensure governments take these essential measures.”
