AIIB's 10th anniversary: Where is the money going?
Over the last four and a half years, AIIB has committed over $37 billion to support projects in 34 countries.
By Miguel Antonio Tamonan // 16 June 2025The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank will hold its annual meeting later this month, from June 24 to 26, marking the 10th year since the regional development bank was established. During its fifth-year anniversary, Devex analyzed how AIIB grew over the five years of its operation. We now looked at what has changed since then by breaking down data from its project portal. AIIB’s financing is guided by its four thematic priorities: green infrastructure, connectivity and regional cooperation, technology-enabled infrastructure, and private-capital mobilization. Since its inception, the bank has approved 319 projects, worth nearly $61 billion in total. All figures from AIIB’s project portal are in current prices. For those with project costs in euros, we converted them to U.S. dollars using average historical rates. The total project amounts used in this analysis only represent AIIB’s financing and do not include co-financing from other donors. Trends in project financing Based on its portal, AIIB approved 201 projects, worth $37.2 billion, from January 2021 up to the first half of 2025. This does not include additional funding from other multilateral and bilateral donors, as well as co-financing from borrowing member countries, which means that the total project costs are likely to be higher. Our findings showed that the bank’s annual approvals fluctuated between 2021 and 2024. From $9.4 billion in 2021, project approvals went down to $6.6 billion in 2022, skyrocketed the following year, to $11.4 billion, then dipped to $8.1 billion in 2024. As of publication, AIIB has approved 14 projects in 2025, with a total financing of $1.7 billion. Halfway through the year, this means that the bank would have to approve at least $6.4 billion to match 2024.

<i style=font-style: georgia;”>AIIB’s total approved projects from 2021 to 2025, based on its portal. Where is the money going?
