Professor Appolinaire Djikeng is the director general of the International Livestock Research Institute and CGIAR senior director of livestock-based systems. He was formerly professor and chair of tropical agriculture and sustainable development at the University of Edinburgh.
Given the diversity of Africa’s livestock sector, a transition to productive and sustainable livestock will likely take some 10 to 15 years and require long-term investment into tailored research and innovation.
